Dash noise - waste of time?
Took my car into get the rattling noise behind the dash fixed. The dealer said they put felt tape over the air-con vents to stop it hitting the dash.
It was ok for about 1 hour and the noise started again.
Am I wasting my time trying to get this fixed? Or should I live with it? Hmmmm don't really expect a brand new 911 to be rattling like a korean car.
It's so annoying when u are doing 160 km/h on the freeway.

I have a similar problem from the dash and from the roof area. Go to allcardata.com and set-up an account, you can pull out all TSBs and bring them to your dealer. You will see that they will need to basically take the car apart for 2 days but that Porsche knows all about it!

Very interesting site, but it looks like you need to be a dealer to sign up for it?
I went to the ALLDATA DIY site but it only covers cars upto 2001, 996 3.4l does not list 996 3.6l

I had the same annoying problem from vibration mainly from when the stereo was loudly played it resonated the dash strips. I put double sided sticky tape without removing the tape cover on the one side between the strip vent opening on the underside of the strips. Cured the annoyance entirely. I think the fact that it's basically 1/8 inch foam did it. Very happy now. Now I just need the new roap seal for the windshield!

I think that job takes about 4-5 hours to do, so they may wish to have the car overnight. If you were thinking of having anything installed in the dash or console (PSE?) you could probably get a big break on the labor.

There is no question you are entitled to a complete fix under warranty. I had that sort of thing done three times under warranty without any problem on the part of the dealers.

its not a problem getting it fixed at the dealer.. just a pain in the *** bringing the car there
the dealer is very good... no complaints at all.
i just think the factory should get its act together

Yes, indeed, each time I bring it to the dealer there're couple more scrapes under my bumper.
They basically take it for a ride and find no rattle. It's annoyingly hard to reproduce. So this time I'm asking for the felt that they use, so that if it still rattles, I will try to fix it myself using the felt that they provide.

Had exactly the same dash cluster problem - the first felt appliance worked a treat - just make sure the buggers put all the screws back in as they left mine loose the first time - tossers.
Got to the point where I was heartily p.o.'ed at all the vibration in that car - everytime I fixed one, something else started - door airbags, speaker housings, dash etc. Maybe I shouldn't have been driving it around fields.
As we're on the topic of interior frustrations, has anyone else got a color coded console where the ashtray cover latch won't stay closed?
