Aside from the 996C2, the wrecked GT3 cost me around $35k and this included the engine, tranny, ecu, wiring harness and all the other parts off the car. And then there was maybe another $20-30k or so in other parts including the seats, brakes, suspension, the actual GT3 rear wing. I should really sit down and do the accounting but that kind of takes the fun out of it. :^)

We're not too far away from finishing. Definitely before summer. We started actual dismantling of the transplant car around fall of last year. It hasn't been full time since you have to just keep working until you run into a problem. It's really tough to tell what all parts we needed until you actually get to working on that part. We had a problem with finding one of the transmission parts that broke during freighting and this held us up for about 2 months.

What were the issues with fitting the engine? Did it not just drop right in??

Yes and no. The issue is that it's the same motor that's used in the 996TT/GT2. Thus it uses the same mounts. If you get a chance try looking in the rear corners of a TT to compare what it looks like in a regular 996C2. It's really different. My mechanic theorizes that the GT3 is really a TT/GT2 tub with the narrow rear fenders. So the GT3 engine "fits" in the 996C2, but the mounts are different so things just don't line up quite right.

The info on the sunroof is interesting. There has been a lot of conjecture on whether the weight difference is substantial. So now we know.

Yes, it's actually quite heavy. Next time I'm back in LA, I'm going to try and weigh everything to see. The no-sunroof panel is only a few lbs and really feels like a feather compared to the sunroof panel and all the structural supports for the sunroof.

We have recently been discussing 5-point vs 6-point harnesses on the Ringers list. You might be interested in reading this link:

You also have to remove the steel bumperette pieces that attach to the rear bumper.

BTW, the US spec rear bumper (not the bumper cover, but the actual bumper) is heavier than the euro rear bumper. This must be due to DOT regulations.

Default Finally...

The conversion is 99% complete. We got her running. It's been a long road and a comedy of errors.

I'll follow up later with a much longer post describing the details of the conversion and some pictures.

A quick question to anyone out there who has access to the Porsche IPAS database in Europe? If I give you an '01 996 GT3 VIN number, could you provide the relevant codes to be able to program and sync up all the electronics? Our current roadblock is that we had a few electronic components that we had to replace and we don't have all the IPAS info to program them with. If anyone could help or point me in the right direction 'twould be appreciated.

More coming soon.

New pictures right before it went off to the paint shop for final detail and sand-polish. It's still missing the side skirts, rear wing, aero fins, side mirrors.

BTW, if anyone can help with getting access to the European IPAS database for Porsche VINs, please let me know. Thanks.

The car is done and is in LA ready to be picked up. I've been so busy with a new company and their IPO, that I haven't had a chance to get down there. I should be heading back to LA in the next few weeks and should have some pictures and more details to follow up with. I can't wait.
