Post My 996 has way too much rear tire wear vs the front.

Anyone have similar problems? Suggestions?

I have 9000 miles. Tires are Continental Sports. The fronts can perhaps go another 10K. The rears may have 1-2K left. I'm thinking of just replacing the rears first.

Among the different tire brands that are OE Porsche certified tires, the Contis have the lowest treadwear rating UTQG 140-160AA. The best treadwear rating is the Dunlop SP9090 UTQG 280AA. Technically speaking, the Dunlops should last twice as long as the Contis. My Contis have 6200 miles on them and I probably have about 2000 miles before they need to be replaced. (I do a lot of stop and go driving). Here are the treadwear ratings on all of the approved OE tires.

Contis - UTQG 140-160AA
Pirelli PZero Assymetricoo - UTQG 140AA
Michelin Pilot Sport - UTQG 220AA
Bridgestone S-02 - UTQG 140-180AA
Dunlop SP9000/SP9090 - UTQG 280AA

Very much a known issue. I'm at 34K and replaced rear P-zeros at 15K and then all four tires at 30K. Fronts still looked ok even then. Put Michelin Pilot Sports on this time for higher wear rating of 220. Like them as much if not more that the Pirelli's. Brent

My 17" S02 have about 18K miles on the front with 2 track events. And 9K miles on the rear with 2 track events. The wear bars are just showing on the front. And the rears are about 35% more tread than the front. But this set may get tossed soon, the insides are wearing way too fast.

I have P-Zero's on my 99 C2.
I have 15,000km on the car.
The rears seem to be wearing more on the outside, than on the inside?
On Saturday, I found out what it feels like to lose the back end at 140km an hour.
It was raining and I hit a large puddle, the back end came around, but i was able to hold it, thankfully.

Is it normal for the outside rears to wear more than the insides on P-Zeros?

I did notice the the P Zeros, even when new seem to be rounded off more on the edges than most other tires..

let me know,,,

10,000 miles for your rears is not bat for a RWD car and even more if its rear engined, but depends on the type of driving. Although you can´t compare the treadwear between different brands (esach brand uses a different standard) you can use it to compare different tires of the same brand. The S-02´s have 140 treadwear and the S-03 have 220! The S-02 for example would last me 6,000 miles on the rear (with hard street-highway driving) on my BMW M3 but are the best road tires out there (haven´t tried the S-03 yet, but soon). When I got the 996 C4 I could not wait until the original ContiSport´s would wear out so I could change them, they were horrilble in terms of handling! its a sin to use those tires because you can use the whole potential of the car.
BTW with the neg. camber of the 996, the tires should always wear out inside first, if not the have it re-aligned quickly.

Guys:

2:1 wear is normal on these cars...consisten with my experience with 993s. It is a shame only turbos seem to come with Pirellis on the 2001s I've been shopping--the Contis are known for being more comfort-oriented and less grippy. Funny, though, I've heard they're good in the longevity department. ?

Keep in mind you cannot compare tire wear or temperature ratings across manufacturers. Those numbers are only for comparison within a family/brand.

That's absolutely right. When tire ratings were devised, manufacturers balked at the original effort to have a universal standard of wear rating, for obvious reasons. They compromised with the current system . So a Conti 140 means it wears twice as fast as another Conti tire with a 280 rating. BUT, a Conti 140 may not wear as fast as , say, a Michelin 200 ! Very deceptive. Very few people who work in tire stores know this .from my experience.

Ok Everyone said it...yep you get to spend twice as much on rears as you do fronts...!
(Don't whine, think if it as a reason to get those conti's off your car faster!!!!...god I hate those tires...!!!)

Someone else mentioned the outside wear. Well the bone stock 996 seems to have "ZERO" camber in the rear!!!! So if you are even a little agressive you will start to get after your outside edges. I too was very surprised to see the outside of my track tires really take a beating....nothing more camber won't fix before I go back to the track!

Gotta tell you that I've got about as little left on the front as I do on the rear with 4k total miles on the car. They seem to be wearing evening on the back and front so far. Then again, I really drive my car (it sees enough hard corners to even out the weight abuse on the rears). I've got about the same left as a friend of mine does on his after 20k miles (same tires)!
