What to look for in a used 996?
Hi I'm pondering getting a 98/99 996C2 Tip for daily use in city (less than 10mile/day) & occasional long trips (no more than 1000).
Can anyone please tell me what to look out for eg. Option list (factory alarm, parkings sensors etc) & their value? When do they start with the clear lenses? Are the exhaust, ECU, MAF etc prone to failures? What can go wrong?
How do I check on the clutch wear or gearbox problems on a tiptronic?
I've heard a bit on the RMS & blown engines. While many complained of the poor built & fit quality. Are 996s really that bad? I didn't mind a 993 but they look a little period to me & the interior is old school. I want a fuss free car that I can bring anyway & with regular servicing, last a few years.
Finally, if I were to stretch my budget a bit should I get a 2000 & later model? Any diff between a C2 & C4, handling/performance etc. Many Thanks.

Clears began with the post-August '98 production cycle, for fall '98 deliveries of '99 units in the US. I had a '99 cab, now an '04 C4S cab.
The '00 year is a better car, trust me. A few quirky things were changed, and for probably not much money difference, I'd go with the '00. RMS issues can be found on every 996 model year, and even through some current 997s.
Anything can fail on these cars, and it can get costly. Try to find a certified pre-owned with some extended Porsche warranty if you want to be relieved of this worry.
C2 vs C4 is dependent on your driving habits and weather conditions. I've had both. I prefer the C4S myself, others like the tail-happiness of the C2 and lighter front end.
996's are great Porsches, as were all in the lineage.
Have a dealer or professional complete a Pre Purchase Inspection with detailed notes on any problems.
