Post Can you add the Onboard Computer

I was wondering if you can add the option for the Onboard Computer (code 659) to a 2000 996 that did not come with it.

Yes. Just have your dealer turn your computer on (with his PST2). Every car has one and in the on mode you get the outside temp displayed. If you want all the functions you can but the 4-position steering wheel stalk and wire it in... or switch modes using a dash mounted switch. OBC hack instructions available for both.

I get the outside temp already...does that mean I just need the arm to wire in?

Yep. You have to buy the whole switch assembly. Or if you don't need the speed gong, just use any old switch. Search for "OBC Hack" and follow all the links.

The computer can be controled by a switch available at any dealer for little $.

Check out this link for complete instructions:

Thanks for all the help, based on the instructions I will see how much the dealer will charge for the install. It looks a little beyound my capability. Taking off mufflers is one thing doing everything in those insturctions is another.

Thanks...

I have done about 25 retrofits with our local Boxster group, mostly with the stalk. Same thing for a 996. I would rather do a trip computer any day vs. a muffler - that is dirty work. Since your outside temp display is on your trip computer has been turned on. One of these days I'll help Loren do it to his 996. Some pics of the install on a 2003. Jeff
