Changing oil in a 996.
I've never changed oil in a Porsche before. This is a bit embarrasing, but can someone kindly tell me where the filter and drain plug are located? Does the car need to be jacked up in the back?

it has been a while since I did mine, but I remember that the drain plug is right in the middle of the motor underneath. You do need to jack the car up beacuse you need to get underneath it to get the oil out and to change the filter. The filter is also easy to get to, and much to my surprise is a cartridge type, so don't damage it when you are removing it. I have often put scew drivers through oil filters to get them off, a bad idea in this case.

It is best to have the right tools.
The hex wrench is 8mm and available many places. The Porsche oil filter wrench is only $7.00 from Porsche... likely worth it if you were to damage the cartridge.

I bought the oil filter cover removal cap-style wrench at Kragen. Flotool size "7" for $4. The 8mm hex head socket is $5 at Sears. TQ the oil plug at 37 ft lbs. TQ the oil filter cover to 19 ft lbs. ( The oil filter insert should come with a new gasket for the plastic reused cover- remember, the insert is tossed - not the oil filter-shaped outer cover ! , so don't damage it). Be sure to by a new soft aluminum "crush" ring gasket for the oil pan drain plug. You need 9-10 qts of Mobil 1 15W-50. Cheapest price is $4/qt at WalMart vs $6 at Kragen, etc.
