I attended the PCA Potomac Autocross school followed by an autocross today. I have to say that the 996 is much different than my 2.7 Boxster. Many people told me priorto my purchase that the 996 is not an ideal car for autoX and that I might miss the Boxster. Well I had a blast. It is true that I can not man handle the 996 the way that I could with the Boxster; however, in slaloms and skid pads I think the 996 was much better, it was only in the very tight apexs or Chicago boxes that I noticed some oversteer making it a bit dificult. With some finness, I think the 996 is going to be as much fun, it is just going to require more work and the Boxster was just effortless. In 2 weeks the season starts with an AutoX that counts for points so lets see what I think then. But for now I say the 996 was much better than some give it credit for. the extra 120 HP was also noticed well.

Interesting, I have an 02 cab as well. I would have never thought 996 would do well in AutoX given the rear weight. I suppose the extra torque was nicer compared to 986. Are you comparing to a 986 or 986 S? I think 986 S would be better than 996 in tight turns.

DJ,
I was comparing a base Boxster. I am not saying the 996 was better, just better than I had expected from what others said. In tight corners the Boxster was much easier to menuever and faster going in and out; however on a fast slalom the 996 seemd smoother and the extra power and torque was noticible, additionaly in a skid pad section on the course the 996 seemed to better throtle steer and I was able to stay much closer to the cones and go around faster than the I could in my Boxster. IMO, the 996 requires the driver to be smoother and the Boxster was more forgiving. I think that a Boxster S would be much better as it has close to the power of the 996 and with all of the handleing of the 986. Just my thoughts, I thought I would share as many had me convinced that the 996 Cab was not worth taking out on an autoX course.
