I started a big thread about these on the "other" forum in the Turbo section. Good reading. I need rears but my Pirelli fronts are still good so I'm thinking about buying a pair of ***-Hoes for the rear until the fronts wear out.

I had a set on my Boxster...They were 17's...The Ecsta 712's....THEY WERE AWESOME......Handled VERY well.....once they got worn they started getting kinda slick and they were loud....If they made them in 19" Carrera sizes, I would buy a set for my 996.....

Pilot Sport 2's... you have an amazing car, why on earth would you want to put some cheap shoes on it? It's like asking Heidi Klum (thinking about her from another thread) to wear some cheap *** Wal-Mart outfit in your fantasy. No thanks.

I totally disagree. Just like most Asian products, in their former years, they had mis-steps along the way. Eventually however, they get it right, and in a big way. I would take Japanese car manufacturers, and to some degree, Korean car companies as a prime example. They are not here for the short term. With each new product, they only get better. I suspect that the same can be said about their tires.
Also, didn't you see, Wal-Mart is starting to move into the high-end?

If they can, why can't Kumho?

I've always run Pirellis on the street and cups on the track. I go through p zeros like underwear at 1100 a set(4), I noticed these were 1/2 the price. Just wondered if they were any good, I'll prolly just do p's again.

I do believe that the other tires have come a long way, but not quite on the same playing field as of yet. I personally believe that there's enough of a differnece in the product to pay the higher premium.

I had a set of Kumho Ecsta MX on my old Eagle Talon AWD - daily driver and autocrosser. They stuck very well when they were warm and were also pretty good in the rain. They were very noisy and quite slippery when cold, and somewhat noisy when warm. All in all, the top-line tires are noticably better. As they should be, for the money.
My opinion is that you shouldn't compromise on the tires for such a great car. Unless you're talking about dedicated AutoX tires. That makes good sense but then you should also consider DOT-R tires for that purpose.

I agree with Dan - I have Kumhos on my 964, and once they're warmed up, they're sticky as hell. I've kept up with many a 996 in the twisties.
Buy the Kumho's and donate the other $600 to an orphanage.

I put a set of Ecsta 712's on my Boxster and they sucked big time. Big mistake that I regretted every time I drove the car hard. Greasy, slippery, squealing cheap tire. Poor dry grip. They would flat spot after only a couple of days, and it took at least 20 minutes of driving to get rid of the flat spotting.
I will never again put a Kumho street tire (or any other cheap, bargain tire) on my Porsche. The money saved is not worth the performance lost.
