Post Engine Tray?

The 964 and the 993 have an engine tray. (mostly due to noise regulations) Does the 996 have an engine tray? I think not...

Nope! And, that's because the engine is water-cooled. No need to insulate it for sound.

Interesting. Didn't know that was the reason for the tray. I also understand that Porsche had to find means of making the water-cooled engine NOISIER, to make it sound more like a Porsche.

And did it ???

Why does it not require protection from the environment, especially in places like the UK. Wont we end up with rusty dirty engines???

I asked this question, because on the 993 board people are afraid to remove their tray. Anything which could happen to it already happens to the 996's (engine getting dirty, etc.), and this is apparently a non-issue.

No, it is not a non-issue. Just because Porsche removed the tray from under the 996 engine doesn't mean thet the engine doesn't get damaged or dirty. First, Porsche recommends a special sump guard to prevent damage to the 996 engine when the car is lowered. Second, I am very happy with my 993 engine being as clean as it is after 31k miles and wouldn't want to change that. There is not good or proven reason to remove the tray from under the 993 engine.

We have had a real heat wave here in Switzerland since about a week (around 100 degrees Farenheit on the road), and when moving the car runs defintely cooler than it used to. This is justification enough for me. I will probably mount the tray again in winter...
This is like the tire pressure issue, or tire brand discussion to name a few, where you just have to make up your mind because there are so many conflicting views.

That's fine. If you want to reduce the heat in your engine compartment, go for it.
