Do you have the Porsche TSB instructions?

I heard it in a Boxster a few years ago. Once you get over cutting the door panels you should be fine. Only info I can think of other than the TSB is here. I think I saved the pictures if they do not show up. Jeff

Loren, I do have the TSB instructions which are very detailed. The only part that seems hard to do is removing the door panels. I do have 18 new clips (9 for each side) so I think the door panels will go back on easy. I have never removed a door panel from a 996 and even though the TSB details how to do it, I feel it might be hard to do but I will take it slow. I'm just hoping that the outcome will be worth the $'s and the time.
Thanks Tool Pants (Jeff) for the pictures.

Does anybody have this upgrade on their car, if so tell me what you think of it.

I had it installed by the dealer and I think they charged me about $300. It was a big improvement over my stock, non-Bose, non-DSP system. Some people will argue you can get more performance for the dollar with an aftermarket system but I wanted to keep everything in stock locations and not add a lot of heavy amplifiers and stuff to the car.

Without question the largest improvement is the amp. Note that with the new amp the stock speakers are too bright. With the configuration in place right now (front / rear HPAS speakers) the base response not sufficient. Dialing up the head unit's (in my case a traffic pro) base response +2 give a more or less overall flat response. Note that this is based upon using a real time audio spectrum analyzer, thus not subjective impressions.

There is no question that the system sounds very good. It is very truthful to the source material.

With respect to the door speakers I am somewhat torn. The appliques are somewhat large and I really don't want to dig into the doors at this point. In addition the system's performance without the new door speakers is very good. I may complete the doors at some point but I'm in no hurry.

I would install everything but the door speakers and give it a try. Overall this should take less than two hours, even taking things slow.

One additional note. On the front / rear speakers do something to prevent the wires from making noise with vehicle vibration. For an OEM look I would suggest cloth tape from Mercedes (P/N A.006.989.84.85.10).

Thanks Karl & Strat for your input.
The Porsche discription in the Techequiptment book describes the amp as 2 X 160 Watt at 2 ohm for Bass reproduction.
In reading the TSB instructions it explaines that the amp is a 4 channel unit with 2 X 160 Watt at 2 ohm for the Bass left and right channel and a 2 X 200 Watt at 4 ohm for the Midrange/Tweeter left and right channel.
By my calculation this system will now have 320 Watts of Bass (160 Watts per channel) and 400 Watts of Midrange/Tweeter (200 Watts per channel), with all new speakers that can handle it.
4 Bass speakers (2 in each door),
4 Midrange speakers(2 up front, 1 left and 1 right) and (2 in the rear, 1 left and 1 right) and
4 Tweeters (2 up front, 1 left and 1 right) and 2 in the rear, 1 left and 1 right)
along with tuned crossovers on all 4 Midrange/Tweeter speaker assemblies.

It sure seems like a great set-up as it is has been specifically developed to match the 996 interior and has a total output of 720 Watts powering 12 speakers, providing I'm understanding all this correctly, and its all going to work with my factory head unit which is the PCM-1 Navagation system.
I can't wait to do this install in my car as i'm just waiting for the parts to arrive and then I will power it up and load my favotite CD (Black Sabbath - Paranoid) and listen to Ozzy at his best, with the top down while crusin Las Vegas Blvd. (The Strip)
Oh by the way, the volume WILL be turned up LOUD

It's a six channel amp - LOUD.

Question for Strat. I have seen Nokia and Haes amps and speakers on 996 and 986 over the years. Who makes the amps and speakers for the HPAS kit? Jeff

It's much better than the pre-02 stock hi-fi (which isn't saying much), but it's a far cry from stuff like Reus' stuff. I think it sounds better than the Bose hi-fi from 02 and up, but it's still nothing to brag about. I also have the rear speakers and "loud" is not how I'd describe it relative to real hi-fi setups the aftermarket guys are doing for the 996/Boxster. If I had it to do over again, I'd have just gone to Rues or Paris Audio.

Strat, I did order the optional rear speakers for the cab as the part# is different from the part# for rear speakers for the coupe.
You say its a 6 channel amp. You mean it has more power than 2 X 160 and 2 X 200
another seperate chanel for the rear speakers?

That is my understanding. Opened up the amp (that is how I found out the manufacture) and there does appear to be six independent channels.
