Damn Mikey, either you drive really hard or those are some tough miles! I commute in stop-and-go traffic 2-3 times a week, and my clutch is still going strong at a shade over 40K miles. I concur with others on the flywheel. That sure sounds like a stealer schpiel.

Though I do use my p-car daily in a certain amount of stop-and-go, I can't imagine I drive any more aggressively or use vastly inferior technique to others here.

So...assuming the flywheel biz is b.s. -- and we'll see if it is -- OK I learned something about my dealer, who I have trusted to this point (2.5 yrs). How much should parts & labor be strictly for a clutch replacement?

To an earlier point, it would be GREAT if clutches were covered under warranty. I've yet to see one that does.

In my old Boxster S, I had the clutch replaced at Pepe Porsche (a dealer) just over $1400. They did a fantastic job. Manhattan Motorsports and New Country Porsche both wanted north of $2400 bucks. Check with multiple dealers and don't be afraid to negotiate. And then, there's always the Indy route which Dell and others detailed fully below. I think you should be able to get out of there for sub-$2000 easy.

if your flywheel is bad it could be under warranty.the clutch on the other hand is a wear item.if i'm not mistaken there is a spec for flywheel deflection(the flywheel has a polymer spring to absorb drivetrain noise).

What are the symtoms of a bad fly wheel? My car makes sound like a bearing is worn, If i put the clutch in, The sound disappears. Car drives fine and i had two dealers tell me it was running within normal specs.

That sounds like the release bearing, it may not be bad but noise is an indication. You will know when the flywheel is bad, do you have any vibration?

To all:

Many thanks. I ended up NOT needing a new flywheel and, for others' benefit, the clutch replacement cost $1700 which seemed to be in line with others' experiences at a p-car dealer. So, thank you rennlist and fellow members...saving ~$1K paid my membership fee many times over.

No vibration. Is the bearing you are referring to clutch or tranny?

Thanks again

When the DMF is shot, it allows excessive radial movement with the centre drive held firm. I think about 25mm measured on the outer edge is acceptable. In UK they cost about £600 plus labour. Mine allowed nearly 50mm movement and made a clunk when setting off. It was not covered by the warranty even though I had only owned the car a matter of weeks and done a few hundred miles. Another happy customer, but I've moved on now to an even bigger turkey - the Mini Cooper S and you should see the faults on Mini2 website. Makes RMS seem almost irrelevant!!
