Maybe we should create an RMS Paranoia forum and ban all RMS madness from the 996 Forum? The RMS Paranoia Forum can also include discussion on UFOs, Bigfoot, Chupacabre and other unexplainable phenomenon. Unfortunately, like moth to flame, I still click on threads containing the dreaded "RMS"... oops, I did it again.

Default RMS

OK heres another potentially ignorant newbie question regarding RMS- is it a concern on tiptronic cars as well or just manuals? Obviouslyl both have a main seal, but appears main potential is to ruin clutch.

Ooohhh Dell's gonna get you

The problem that some cars have with the RMS is that the car starts to leak oil. The cause of the leak, as well as the rate of the leak, can vary from car to car, and have nothing to do with whether the car is standard or automatic. Under some circumstances, oil leaking can ruin a clutch on a standard car, but not always, but that, in my opinion, is an ancillary issue to the main one: the oil leak.

Actually that is a very good question.

As I was told by the dealer technician, the tiptronic cars don't have the RMS problem.

But after doing some thinking... Obviously there is still a rear main seal, and obviously it would leak, right?

So the components right after the input shaft on a tiptronic car is a torque converter, as it is still an automatic, however fancy name you want to call it. Steptronic, tiptronic, whatever... The last I checked all torque converter and the surround are filled with transmission fluid in order for it to function. So either the pressure from the torque converter is keep the RMS sealed? Or the leak gets mixed together the transmission fluid? Unless there is a separate chamber that separates the torque converter chamber from the engine side?

I wonder....
