Default Oil level question

I now have almost 2,400 miles on the car and have yet to add any oil. I checked the oil this morning and all but one of the bars is lit up. So how much oil should I add to fill this one unlit bar on the oil indicator to get it back to full?

You do NOT want to fill it all the way to the full line. In between the hi and lo mark is what you are aiming for. You are just fine. Go back and RTFM for further explanation.

And what the heck are you worried about not being able to add oil after 2400 miles? That is the sign of a nice sealed engine.

I am damn happy i have not yet had to add any oil. I was very strict with the recommended break in rules so I better have a good seal on the thing. So you are telling me despit all bars not being full now that I am just fine? No need to add any yet? At which point should I add some, and how much? I will RTFM a bit later, but I don't have it with me, and was going to go get some oil after work. I just wanted an estimate on how much to buy with one bar not lit. I would guess that would indicate less than a quart, but cannot recall the amount of oil each bar represents.

Yup, just fine. If anything you do NOT want to overfill the sump. That would be bad as well.

Each bar represents .2 liters of oil and you have several between the lo and high indicator bar (1 liter between hi and lo). Check you oil (old fashioned dipstick method) in the morning before you start the car to get the most accurate reading since you have had all the oil drain down into the sump overnight.

add oil when you get nearer the lowest bar. That range is like the min/max range on your dipstick.

Good advice LV. Those from the previous 993 school may be addicted to adding oil, mine was in good condition but used 1 litre or quart per1000 miles
Also the engine is not idling in the 996 when measured . The 996 has yet to need topping up after 2k miles, I measure the level after about 15 mins of driving while the oil is warm and mostly drained back.

I have a 99 C2 with 60,000 miles and in the 20,000 miles I have owned it, I have never had to add any oil between changes. I drop down a bar or two below the top mark and that is it. And yes, I do check it both with the guage and dipstick often. I think the fact I use the car on a fast daily commute of 65 miles each way, mostly interstate or country roads has a lot to do with it.

Thanks guys. I will check on the dipstick too. I now at least have an idea of the computer indicator.

Yes it does. But for those of us that rev the bejesus out of the car every time we get in, don't be surprised if you use a little more oil than you might think. Besides, like it really matters: when you think about it, oil is cheaper than bottled water. Can you imagine the driving costs if you had to fill the engine with a Porsche designer motor blend? Whoops, I don't want to be giving the Federation any good/bad ideas.

Got a question: On the bar guage on the compuer there is like a level mark one bar below the top. If you filled it with too much oil I presume it would show that you overfilled it?

Also If I am 2 bars from the top ( I mean where that mark is not the top top bar) what would that equate to in ml?

nycebo,
how do you check oil level on MY01 car?
turn on the key without cranking the engine, and wait for reading?
if there any other way? i don't have manual.
if you happen to have the pdf for MY01 owner's manaul, please let me know.

When people sy Rentech, what is it they are referring to? The only Renntech I know of is a Mercedes tuner.
