The responsible designer for the 996 is Harm Lagaay. Never heard anything different.

Harm Lagaay was the head of design for PAG at the time, but it was Pinky Lai who was the lead designer of the 996, Just like he was head of BMW Technic studio during the development of the Z1 and oversaw the designers (including my brother) who actually penned the design.
Read "Perfection by Design": great book and it outlines the development of p-cars very accurately.
