So I have been lurking for a while since mid summer. I finally have reasonably good pictures of a freshly cleaned car. It's a CPO 2000 C4 Cab that I picked up in Rochester NY. I had a great time driving it back, although I got sunburned. I've done a couple of mods, the clear side markers, gauge rings, and a phatnoise instead of the CD changer. I'm attempting to install Sirius but I can't seem to get it nicely integrated into the console. I have a couple of newbie questions:

1) How quickly should the gas gauge indicate empty from a full tank? Mine is empty after 150 miles, but can be driven another 100 until it's really empty. The dealer says it's correct. Is it?
2) I've never seen my rims anywhere, are they actually from Porsche or some other maker?
3) When the car is not driven for a while (2 - 3 weeks), is it common for the battery to go dead? I've had to push the car out of the garage with my wife at least 2 times. It was absolutely no fun at all.

Looks fantastic.

1) That's bull**** from the dealer. I remember early C4's had a recall on the gas gauge, this usually occured when you filled up the car while the engine was running. Should be covered and fixed if this is the problem.

2) I've never seen those rims either. This will give you something to spend money on

3) Dead battery is common, go buy a trickle charger their not expensive and will keep your battery juiced.

Hi Bob,

1) Mine is pretty accurate. I never drive when it's "empty" empty but, I get on average around 250-300 miles per tank (using from 3/4 full to 1/4 full multiplied by 2).

2) Those are definately not OEM.

3) No. Although I don't leave my car for 3 weeks at a time, it shouldn't go dead. The proper solution is figuring out what's draining it, while the cheap solution is a battery tender. The cheapest solution is just to drive your car more, there's a lot of informal research that suggests that the cars that are driven more regularly tend to be healthier in the long run.

Welcome Bob! I too am very new to the 996 scene but have some insight to your inquiries.

1) When I picked up my 2001 996 I drove 250miles at a good clip before being near the big "E" 150 seems a little low.

2) don't know.

3) My car has been in the shed for about a month now and I started it up tonight for this first time since it's banishment and it fired up without hesitation.

Welcome to the ZOO. Nice of you to post pics right away. Beautiful Cab! OK about Q's:

1. There is a TSB about fuel gage misreading (1/04 2066 Incorrect Fuel level Display In Instrument Cluster), but not sure ir applies to yours.
2. No idea...don't think so,
3. Mine lasts for several weeks no problem. You may need to check any drain on the system. Of course if it is an original battery, it may need replacing.

Lose the front plate! I haven't used one in NJ for 6 years. Front plates help the police shoot you with them Lazer radar guns. I'd rather pay the $50 ticket then $$$$ speeding ticket.

about your wheels, if you remove one or can't get a mirror back there you ought to be able to see a part number probably begining with 996. I suspect those are aftermarket wheels. Check out wheelenhancement.com they have all the stock wheels for every year 996 911 and Boxster.

I bought a set of those wheels as winter wheels. I believe they are stock 17" option for a 2001.

I noticed you bought your car from John Holtz. I bought an S4 from them years ago and had a pretty good experience. They even covered after the sale fixes they problably shouldn't have. If their Porsche dept is similar they should take care of you well.

Those are the stock 17" C4 wheels... oem for sure ... 1999 and 2000.

I have a 99 C4 ... something is wrong with your gauge for sure (I dont recall exactly but at 1/2, I have usually driven 150 miles or so.

Thanks for the complements on the car. That fuel gauge, I thought the dealer was BSing me. Next time it goes in I will ask again. I think I'm going to go with the Costco battery, it looks like it's the original one in the car. John Holtz was not too terrific, after I paid they didn't want to release the car, first it was confirming it was a CPO then they claimed my bank checks didn't clear. It was't a transaction I would want again. But now that the car is in NJ, I take it to Paul Miller they seem good.

Welcome and Congrats! Nice p-car...silver is the way to go (but then again I'm biased. Drive it everyday and the battery charge won't be a problem.

Welcome and congratulations! I've only had my C2 for about 2.5 months, but I can't believe you guys who go WEEKS without driving it. Unless you have an even nicer car to drive, why let it sit? ;-) Mine rarely goes 24 hours uncranked.
