What would have caused that corrosion in 5000 miles?

That is an excellent question that neither I nor Joe could answer. Especially considering the system is built from stainless steel.

Note: You have to look in the "Non-Member" ad section to find the Fabspeed system!

all Fabspeed 996/993 exhaust are made from T304 stainless steel. T stands for type and 304 is the type of stainless steel of which there are many many varieties. Typically super quality aftermarket exhausts are made from T304SS.

For everyones information T304SS only gets surface corrosion when exposed to extreme heat and water as the carbon molecules oxidize at the surface. This is normal and customary for all T304SS when heat cycled and is not a quality or durability problem.

FWIW, Porcshe used T409SS as does GM in highend cars as its cheaper and easier to work with. This is magnetic and has even more carbon content and has even more surface rust and ultimate in heavy salt and wet corrosive evironments the pipes can get very thin as has been seen on 993 inlet mufflers and older exhaust pipes.
