Thumbs up Short Shift Kit in C4 installed !

Hi Guys,

Today my Porsche shop installed the short shift kit in my Carerra 4 cab. The kit comes from TechArt and is very expensive, $641.
But since I could not find any short shift kit for the Carrera 4 I had to go with it. But I am very happy and in my opinion it is worth it. It shortens the shifting travel up to 30%. You can choose between 10%,20% or 30%. Installation time is 2 hr. I don't know if they have it for the MY02. Check it out on :

How does this $640 shifter differ from the billet aluminum short 996 shifter from B&M ( also a 30% reduction in throw ) that sells for $250 -300 ?

What's different about the shifter? According to B&M, they do not differenciate between C4 and C2. Just wondering. I was planning on installing the new B&M I have in the garage in my C4S............for $640, I'll live with the stock one.

MikeG,
automotion does. They told me I cannot install the B&M shifter in my Carrera 4.
Maybe there is some news, which I don't know. The TechArt is actually not a shifter these are some metal parts, which you install in the transmission. I don't know more, because I did not install it. My car is a 2001 911 (996) carrera 4 Convertible. To spend or not to spend so much money for a shorter shift is a personal matter. I like to have a sportier car, what, IMHO, the stock 996 is not.

No offense meant, man. You are welcome to spend as much or as little on your car as you want...

I was just curious since the B&M folks don't differentiate.

If there are tranny pieces to install, I can see the big cost. I would want the best possible if I was going to screw with the tranny.

Was the $640 installed or just the parts?

I installed a B&M in a 99 996 and I have another I was going to put in my '02 C4S...but I guess not.

MikeG,
none taken. I guess i forgot to put one of these nice guys behind my message.

Anyway, until you told me i did not know that there is a B&M for a 4 wheel drive. And i don't know nobody who has it installed. $640 are only for the part. My porsche shop charged me around $100 for the installation.
Do you have a MY02 C4S ?

C4S.....yup.

Picked it up Tuesday. Now has 70 miles on it. I raced my 996 C2 in SCCA autocrosses and now I will try this car. I probably wouldn't have put the shifter in anyway since it moves me to the next higher class.

You can check out pictures:

Can you tell a big difference in the shifter? Have you tried adjusting it to the different throw lengths?

MikeG,
congrats, this is a great looking car.

I have only tried the 30%, and the difference is big. The 996 shifts now like my 964 speedster. Or almost as short as my wifes ghia.;-)

I also just bought the TechArt short shifter kit for my 996 TT. I had the B&M on my 996 C2. The TechArt is totally different in that it is installed at the transmission. There is a new mount for the two cables and a you disconnect the shifter cable at the transmission and then there is a piece that changes the angle on the lever out of the transmission. I would have installed mine, expect you need a tri-square driver that I did not have. It is expensive, but I bet it took considerable experience. I am taking pictures of the install that I will post.

As Kevin posted, the TechArt short shift kit is a completely different design than the Evo or B&M kit. There is no console removal, no change made to the shift lever or shifting mechanisn in the car. All is done at the tranny from underneath the car. It works great with little, if any, increase in shifting effort. Here's a pic of the kit. BTW, installation takes less than 30 minutes if you have the tools and prior installation experience.

I understand why you guys would want a shorter shift on the 996 but what I can't believe is that the Tech Art guys charge $640 for 3 pieces of metal and some screws.

Someone please "copy" this design and sell it at a fair markup.

Those are, indeed, very valuable screws! <img src="graemlins/roflmao.gif" border="0" alt="[hiha]" />

Perhaps, there was some R&D recoupment built into the pricing.

Just to let you know the B&M 996 shortshifter fits both the 996C2 & 996 C4 cars. I have had many shops install B&M shortshifters on Carrera 4s with no problems.

Essentially, B&M never got a 996 Carrera 4 into their shop as they intially developed their shortshifter when the 996 C2 came out in 1998. Several years later as usual Porcshe rolls out the Carrera 4. This is typical in the aftermarket performance industry.......you dont know if it will fit until the newest version car shows up at your doorstep. But rest assured the B&M ****er fits all 996 Carrera 4s including the mighty 996TT and GT2

have a great day
