Post Difficult to shift from 1st to 2nd & 3rd to 4th. Need advice please

When shifting from 1st to 2nd at about 3,000 rpm the gear shift lever seems to get "hung up" in neutral until I force the shift lever into the 2nd gear position (I fully depress the clutch pedal to the floor board). The shift from 2nd to 3rd is smooth then the same thing happens from 3rd to 4th. Finally 4th to 5th and to 6th are smooth and OK.
Has anyone else experienced the similar problem? If yes, how did you finally resolve the problem?
Your responses will help me in evaluating whether the dealer is just blowing smoke at me.
Thanks for your responses.

The shifting is very smooth in all gears on my '99 coupe - though I have heard others say that shifting has felt "notchy" during the break in period on their cars. Ask your dealer to allow you to take a test drive on one of their new '02 coupes for a comparison with another low milage '02. That should help determine whether what you are feeling is "normal" or something else.

Before I got my 99 C2, I had American muscle cars with heavy, notchy shifters that had to be slammed into gear if you wanted a fast shift. I had to relearn shifting with the 996 because the shifter definitely likes a soft touch. In fact, I stopped shifting with my full hand on the shifter and started using just two fingers to practice more delicate shifting. The shifter just seems to fall into the right gear if you give it a little guidance.

If trying a lighter touch doesn't help, get your dealer to adjust the shift linkage. If I remember correctly, the 996 shifter uses two cables, one that controls the up/down motion and the other that controls the left/right movement. It could be that the up/down cable just needs a little adjustment.

Thanks Brobbinson and Karl S for the suggestions.

I had the trouble you describe from 1st to 2nd and the additional problem of it jumping out of first or being hard to put into first at a light. Got a new transmission. Started out as first gear synchros and ended up being totally replaced.
