Best way to remove rear wheels
I need to remove the rear wheels. Is there anything wrong with chocking the fronts, then lifting the rear via the "L" mark on the engine, and placing rear jackstands? Thanks,

Ed,
If by the "L" mark you mean the L shaped metal ridge on the bottom of the 996 engine case, then what you described will work. Use a block of hardwood between the jack and the engine case to avoid the jack plate from coming in contact with any other part of the case or oil pan.

I just looked at the engine - I can't seem to identify this L shaped mark. Is it on the large, flat surface (which might be the oil pan, perhaps?), or is it an extraneous hunk of metal? Anyone have a diagram, photo or some other visual aid? Thanks.

Sorry, Ed, but I don't have a 996 any more or I'd take a picture. It is definitely NOT in the oil pan area, stay away from that. If you don't know where it is, you may want to go to Auto-Therapy this Saturday and ask one of the Potomac PCA tech inspectors to show you (details on the Potomac web site).
If you don't want to wait until Saturday, jack the car up by the front jack point and slide jack stands under the rear jack point on each side. It will take a little longer but it will be much safer than jacking the car from the wrong place on the engine and damaging it.

Thanks. I found a chunk of metal with a scrape on it that may be what you are talking about. It is behind the oil pan. I'll use the other method until I verify this location. Thanks,

How else would you get all 4 up in the air?
