Post ? about 5 spoke lite alloy wheels

Hi everyone!! Has anyone switched from the turbo rims to the 5 spoke lite alloy rims? If so do you notice any difference in ride/acceleration? Thanks. Mike

Mike,

Paul in CA did the change. Saw them on his car last weekend. Try here or on CFG's board.

Not quite what you're asking for but perhaps this will help. I recently switched from a set of 19's (Artec Turbo Ps) to the light weight five spokes. Any percieved differences are no doubt due to tires. The Turbos-PS were shod with Goodyear F1 235/35, 275/30s and the 5 spokes have 225/40, 285/30s Kumho Esctas. Interestingly, the Kumhos are far quieter than the Goodyears and the ride is better, although that may be mostly due to 18 vs 19. The Artecs combo felt about 10 lbs heavier that the 5 spokes. I recently started autocrossing and switching to Kumhos resulted in ~5-7 second drop in my times on a ~1 mile course ( 95% has to be the tires, I doubt the wheels make any difference at all). Interestingly there is quite a difference in the radius of the two sets. The rear 19s filled the fender wells, with the 18s theres substantially more gap. I would guesstimate that the 19s in the rear where at least an inch taller. So even with this gearing advantage (which has to be more significant than a weight reduction of a couple of pounds), I haven't percieved any improvement in off the line acceleration.

Yeah I feel that from a concept point of view having liter weight of anything would help but from what I gather it's so miniscule(liteweight rims) that can't be sensed by the driver but I hear you with reference to tires makes the biggest difference. I need a second set so I said to myself why not get a lighter one with some Dot R's since I'm at this point. Regards and thanks. Mike

I formerly had an RS America and had a set of Carrera Cup wheels (extremely heavy) and a set of BBS racing wheels both with the same tires. You would be really hard pressed to notice a difference in either ride or acceleration. There may have been a small benefit in turn-in but it would be very slight.
