Hollo I'm new here few 996 questions
Hi,
I need some help. I am think about getting a use Carrera C2 99-01. I currently own '99 M3 I love it but now is time to move on somethig new. I don't know much about Porsche, but if you where to buy one what year. I plan to do few mod for track. Thanks in advance.
I've thought about E46 M3 as well but I want the sport car look not luxo/sport.

The e36 M3 is a great car altogether for both street/track as one of my friend's has a '97 and we track together quite abit and the practicality of more user space. The Porsche is quite practical as well for a sports car having 2+2 where if you have kids the back seats help though very small for adults if on long trips but short jaunts is fine plus if you golf- you can have 2 golf bags in the back and a buddy for the ride. "99 996 comes with no PSM(but with Traction control only as an option and can be swtiched off entirely unlike PSM but PSM is a great safety feature) and no E-gas(just mechanical throttle linkage). If you plan to get one make sure all TSB's have been taking care of which should be done under warranty ie RMS(rear main seal)-oil leak, air bag lite, center console hinge breakage, gas cap, rear decklid corrosion, sunroof rattle, clutch pedal squeak which IMO ntohing really major-just visits to the service department(gives me reason to look at cars on the lot). Of those had RMS/airbaglite/Rear deck lid/gas cap/center console fixed under warranty. Make sure you get a PPI on the car as well. Options to consider are litronic lights/ full leather interior/traction control if its a '99 or PSM on later models/radio-your call which I only listen to radio anyway. In terms of mods later post again when you decided on the car. Regards and good luck. Mike

With Porsche newer is almost always better since they sort out bugs as they go along.
I would tell you to get a 2000 since they sorted out most of the weird stuff by then. And there is not much diff between a 2000 and 2001 (other than you will pay a little more).
If your new to Porsches then I would recommend the PSM (MY2000 and newer) and as mentioned before the radio will suck....replace the speakers, put in a nice amp..keep the head unit :-) You'll be very happy.
Good luck...and welcome to our little Porsche family <img src="graemlins/bigok.gif" border="0" alt="[thumbsup]" />

This is more of a question than a statement but isn't one of the advantages of the 1999 996 that it was available for limited slip differential (either as standard or an option, not sure which)?
I would think that this could be a big advantage and might outweigh the PSM to someone so inclined. I certainly would think in this direction -- especially if I had plans to modify the stock suspension.
