Post OBC Hack problem Help!

Hi, I already had the dealer unlock the temp for the display ala the obc etc. I got the switch and the vw wire for the molex connections. pn # 000.979.010. However upon taking the instrument connectors off and when I was about to insert the connector in the block, it seems that it is way too big for the block pin 21, or any other slot. Is this the wrong wire? I have a 99 996 and I have the white face guages as a stock option if that makes a difference. I could not figure out how to fit such a large connector in such a small hole. Any ideas I would like to wrap the project up and put my dash back together! Thanks

I have done it about 25 times on 1997-2003 Boxsters - w/stalk and w/switch - same procudure for a 996 except the instrument cluster on a 996 did not change in 2001 as it did on a Boxster. Here is some recent information including pictures of the wires and the wiring harness you should be using on a 1999 996 which involves splicing 2 different VW tires together. UK board

After I typed this I looked at your message again and it looks like you are doing it with a switch instead of replacing the steering column switch assembly. You should be using 1 VW wire which you cut in half and extend with normal wire. The part number you listed is correct for your year and the metal terminals should just slide right into slots 21 and 25. The barb on the termal faces out so that it locks into the sloted "window" of the instrument cluster connector. There are 4 sides to the square terminal so make sure it is facing the correct way when you insert it into the connector.

If that does not work then they sold you the wrong wire - it has happened to me. There is no part number on the wire and VW has many 2' long yellow wires with many different terminals. Where I buy them they have all kinds of yellow wires mixed up and I have to pick through them to get the ones I am looking for. Jeff

I am thinking that it is the wrong wire as the connector is extremely long. Do you have a close up view of the proper connector? It would be helpful if it was next to the connector hole also but whatever. I will check on that size etc. Also check out the Carography on dtv right now it's all about Porsche with the 911 etc. Pretty neat. Thanks. Sean

This is a pic of a 2003 grey connector as the 4 wires are being inserted - so do not get confused as the connector on that year has 32 slots and is in a different location. On your year you should be inserting just 2 wires on the white connector - which has 26 slots.

I think you want a picture of the terminal on the end of the yellow wire? I was not able to get a good picture as it is so small.

The proper wire will just slide right in a make a click when the barb locks it in place. Jeff

Found out what it was. The dealer gave me the wrong wire! Just hooked it up and finished it off. The only question is, what switch I want to use. I am currently using a heated seat one, but the red light stays lit all the time. Any suggestions on what the best light would be to fit on the center left side? thanks again!

The common switch to use is the footwell light switch. 996 613 980 00 as it has the gloss finish. There are 5 terminals but you only use the inner 3.

The rest of your question makes no sense to me. The 3 wires connected to a switch for the obc hack have no power to light the indicator on a switch. Have you purchased a new switch and put it in or are you trying to use an existing switch - if so you cannot do it with an existing switch but must buy and install an additional switch just for the obc.

I am using a new heated seat switch and I am only using the three center terminals as well. The red light on the switch is always on though. I am thinking I am going to return the switch if they let me and get two of those other switches
thanks.
