Sorry all to elongate this issue!

I was chased by a 928S4 once and at first it seemed like he was keeping up with ease until I realised I was in 6th gear doing 80mph! Well, a quick drop down to 4th and what can I say - he just dropped back into the distance and never caught up. He did flash me furiousely though as I was pulling away.

Just use the gears properly when slight detection of preasure - 996 has real ability, just needs to be exploited in the right way.

Alright alright settle down now troops. I don't want this to get into a George/Carlos vs Yellow Monster thing.

What I'll do is this....I'm still in the market for a 996, and know a few people who own them. Give me a few days, and I'll set up some comparisons and get a more accurate picture of exactly what a S4 will do against a 996.

996Cab, if you were only going 80 and dropped down a gear or two, then the 928 could've done the same (one gear down though)....our V8's or mine, is barely spinning at 3000rpm at 80, I gaurantee had I dropped down a gear WITH you, I'd still BE with you. Usually when I flash my lights furiously at a car that's pulling away from me it's because I know something the other driver doesn't, like a speed trap ahead, or a car that I think is a cop behind. (laugh) Anyway, I'll try and set something up to get some answers as well as figure out if I really want a 996.

The only memorable experience I have of getting my doors hopelessly blown off was by a nondescript 944 Turbo that had a Powerhaus sticker on it and a trench pipe of an exhaust under it....I simply couldn't get closer than 5 car lengths and he absolutely WALKED ME like a dog on Sunday. I saw him 10 car lengths back and even went down a gear, had my foot to the floor and he just went A ROUND ME (that's right, A then ROUND) and away from me.

Anyway, I'll try to get that comparison going...any other issues I should look for in an early year 996 besides the ones mentioned by Mike?

I forgot to mention that for some reason when arming the alarm the phantom window can occur like it would open up like a quarter way sou may have that checked out as well. After reading this post I think this is about purchasing a 996 not comparo testing. All Porsche's are great cars for what it does and if u really wanted to outdrag neone get a zo6 at half the cost. I imagine for early 99 models depending on options you can get a nice one with low mileage for around 47-50k if u look around. I think a good range is newhere between 48-55k is a good range to look at being 55k must be fully opted and in excellent condition. I would recommend full leather option/litronic headlites/ sound system with cd changer/ 18 inch turbo rims or ne 18 rims over the 17's/ Stainless steel tips/Navigation system would be nice but didnt have one in mine-don't need it/3 spoke steering wheel. Thats to the best of my knowledge of the basic things u need for the car.I may add later on when I can remember what else : ). Regards and good luck on your purchase. Mike

Thanks Mike, that's exactly what my post and this thread are about. My 928S4 much as I love her is simply becoming too expensive to maintain. I could let things slide but my conscious doesn't let me and I like having a fully functional and mechanically sound vehicle. She's reliable, but maintenance is maintenance and I like taking care of things soon as they show up. In anycase, rereading the posts I think I see where it turned into a drag racing match. It was never my intention to give the impression that I was lining up my Porsche against anything else in a traditional drag race (standing start) way. Just good natured high speed running on the occasions where there is a clear road ahead and another enthusiast willing to run with you.

I'll keep all these issues in mind when I look over the records of the various 996's I scope.

I just recently(3 weeks ago) sold my 1991 928GT(one of approx. 150 in country)which I took to many PCA drivers ed events. I am a salesman at my local Porsche/Audi dealer. I drive the 996's, 986's and 986S's all the time. I just purchased a 99 996 C2 coupe. My opinion of the 2 cars is....928 cant be beat for performance/comfort/everyday drivability/purchase price. 996 is more modern, obviously different in design, and handels better. Pat Edwards, I know of your 85 Predator. You will be VERY happy with the 996. It is a better car than a 928, but while the 928 was in production, nothing beat it. I would drive a 928 over a 993 every day of the week. The 911 was always a car I would "never" own. Not unless it is a 996. I love my new-to-me 996. Cant wait to get to the first DE this summer...

Call me retentive, but I wanted to correct a few optimisticly-stated facts:

- '87-'88 S4 has a 2.20 (ugh) final drive ratio, 2.54/2.64 in Euro
- '89 S4 is 2.54/2.64 (at/5-speed)
- GT is 2.73
- the GT isn't light, it weighs a little more than the early S4 5-speed: 3505 on paper, more in real life (haven't weighed mine yet)

Oh, wait, this is the 996 board. Sorry. Enjoy,

Curt

Yes, I traded my 928 in for a 993 Cab and BOY was I disappointed! The 993 offers spirited driving but by comparision it is no match in comfort, performance, and hate to say but- maintenance. I have never got the kind of maintenance bills for my 85 928S that I get for my 96 993 Cab. It goes though oil like its gasoline (1 quart every 600 miles or so ). I just repaired a simple gear for the conv.top. It was a wopping $700 for the two very small gear parts that looked like they were worth all of $20 each! No doubt about it, 993 is pricey but I do love the looks of the car. It still, like my 928 gets a lot of stares and "nice car" comments.

However, as far as 996 goes...oh yes- a fine hybrid of the best of the 928 and the best of the 911 combined into one car. Reports on the maintenance requirements on the 996 seem to indicate it is a relatively maintenance free Porsche by comparision of others in past years and first year maintenance requirements etc.

I am looking forward to my 2002 coupe. I just arrived at the pier the other day and should be at the dealer by tomorrow and hopefully in my garage within a week or or so. I CAN'T WAIT!

Of anyone is still interested- Here is a link to that 911 Porsche World article comparing the 928s4 (automatic) to a 2001 996 that was published several months ago.

You will need a larger monitor that I have (laptop screen) to read the article. It was a rather flattering review for the 928.

Thanks Pat and indeed the article was a little difficult to read on laptop but if you tilt your screen down towards the desk and sit back you can get through it.

I agree with the author 100% in his comparison of the cars. Everything he noticed about the 928 was dead on accurate. The section about crosswinds was excellent. While I've not driven a 996 in severe conditions I have been in terrible crosswinds more than once in my 928 and only noticed it because it suddenly seemed other drivers were drunk or I happened to look up at trees if they were lining the highway!! He mentioned the 91GT trip computer showed a range of around 330 miles...my 88 has run 460 miles at 100mph and left 1 gallon in the tank. (when my lamp comes on I have 4 gallons left exactly)

Anyway, I don't think a 996 is in my future but thanks for all the input guys.
