Question Traction control vs PSM, e-gas

I just purchased a 99 996 which was manufactured July 99...when did e-gas become standard equip? My car has traction control with ABD...what is the difference between traction control with ABD and PSM?

Drive-by-wire was standard on the '99 Carrera 4 and became standard on all 2WD Carrera's and Boxster's as of MY '00. The following explains TC, ABD and PSM.

From Porsche:

TRACTION CONTROL Generic term for electronic controls that reduce drive wheel slippage, intended especially for low-traction conditions. Taking advantage of the sophisticated software already employed by ABS systems, any wheel can be slowed by selective brake application in order to help the retain traction. Other systems automatically modulate the throttle. The more sophisticated traction control systems utilize both capabilities.

ABD (Automatic Brake Differential) A type of traction assistance which applies the brakes to a slipping wheel, transferring torque to the opposite wheel. ABD systems generally operate at lower vehicle speeds.

Porsche Stability Management (PSM) is designed to stabilize the car when driver loss of control is impending. PSM uses a number of sensors that provide input to a high-tech control unit. The unit continuously checks and compares input from the sensors to determine the vehicle's direction and movement and how it differs from the direction chosen by the driver based on steering-wheel input. If the system senses that the vehicle is deviating from its proper path while accelerating or coasting — by oversteering or understeering — it takes corrective action by selective braking, throttle change, and gear change on Tiptronic equipped models.

For 2000-on, you could get PSM as an extra option. It was option M476 and listed for $1215.

The answer is no. From 2000 on, your only choice is PSM. No conventional traction control.

You should know that on the '99's traction control was an option not standard equipment. I don't have the option code handy for that year, but if the car has it it will be noted on the warranty book and on the inside of the front hood. Also, there will be a black switch with the letters "TC" on the dash since traction control can be deactivated.

My 99 option code is 224 and also has the TC switch on the dash. It does help...I was on snow covered roads during the holidays.

Bloke, I'm not sure traction control is really neccessary. The one time I had to drive my C2 after a couple of inches of snow I was amazed by the traction provided by hanging the engine off the back bumper. Even with P-Zeros I had no problems getting moving. Stopping was a bit more exciting though.
