Post Litronic Upgrade question

I have read on this board that upgrading is fairly easy and the cost ranges from 1,000k to 1,200K. The only caveat being that there is no auto leveling feature.

I called the dealer and they stated that their kit cost $1,900 and it does include the auto leveling feature. They also quoted me a price of $750 for installation ($125 per hr/ 6 hrs.)

Can anyone confrim that this is correct?

I upgraded to Litronics in my 99 model. I know my lights move up and down when I turn them on, so I am sure this is the auto level feature. I am not sure the exact cost of my upgrade, but what you were quoted sounds a bit high to me. Perhaps shop around and see if you can get it for cheaper.

I sw the litronics advertised at suncoast for much cheaper than the price you mentioned. Here is the link:

<a href="http://e-partssales.com/Merchant2/merchant.mv?Screen=PROD&Store_Code=P&Product_Code=00004490041&Category_C ode=POTE996EX" target="_blank">http://e-partssales.com/Merchant2/merchant.mv?Screen=PROD&Store_Code=P&Product_Code=00004490041&Category_C ode=POTE996EX</a>

I was debating it but I always thought you could simply swap out the old lights for the new ones (this takes ten minutes). If a technician needs six hours to do it, then that changes the price all together.

Thanks...I just called Suncoast to confirm ( $1,095 ), no auto leveling and they sent me the PDF on how to install. They did say that there is another part that you can buy that will do the auto leveling called the point indicator or somenting.

There is a lot more entailed that just swapping the headlight. I am going to visit the dealer in person, bring the PDF and find out exactly what is going on. If what I found out was true it is a $2,800 upgrade. It is a $1,090 option on a new Porsche.

Suncoast is awesome, I ordered some side marker lights from them and they came in pretty quick (and you can track it on the web through UPS)so I would suggest ordering from them if you are gonna go through it. Also, can you send me that pdf when you get it? If it is too involved, I will most likely not change my lights out. (but I do want to get clear halogen lamps as mine still ahve that amber lower part which I hate. Any ideas on where to get those from? Or I will buy your old ones off of you (if you got em).

I've got the same question, regarding the auto leveling feature. I thought the auto-level on HID lighting was mandated by law (I think I read it somewhere). Anyone out there have an answer?

I have retrofitted the lits in a 2002 Boxster. The TSB for installing them states that the retrofit does not have the leveling feature - you are confusing that feature with the high beam rotation which does work with the kit if you also install the control unit in the front trunk that comes with the kit.

The retrofit kit cannot have the leveling feature as when the car is built for lits there is a sensor installed on the left front and left rear suspension that senses the angle of the car. The sensors are not installed at the factory unless the car is built for lits. Also, the factory built lit car has an additional control unit under the passenger side of the dash for the leveling feature. Jeff

Tool Pants:

How hard was it to install the Lit? Does it really take 6 hrs?

Thanks

I do not know where you got 6 hours. The TSB for the retrofit states that a Porsche mechanic should do it in 180 TUs - Porsche-speak for 1 hour and 48 minutes.

It took us about 2 1/2 hours when we did it in July 2002 as we had not done it before, the wiring on the 2002 Boxster had changed from the original 1999 TSB we were trying to follow (the TSB was revised last month to note the wiring change on a 2002) so we to figure it out for ourselves, took too many picture, drank too much beer, and 2 people do the work while 10 others watching giving advise.

I see you are in Redwood City so you may want to contact the Bay Area Boxster Group if you want to do it and we will set something up as we get together to work on cars all the time. Jeff.
