What's the redline on the 996? The Carrera I was driving would accelerate excruciatingly slowly out of tight corners and wouldn't go past 6500rpms. I suspect the car had some problems.
Ok, good, it was the car not me. =) I couldn't figure out why all the other 996s I was driving with would kill me out of the tight stuff, someone said it was possibly PSM but I don't think I activated it.
Like Loren said- car should go to rev limiter at 7300 rpm but since I don't have PSM don't know it's behavior in track situations. Has anyone out there with PSM who tracks have this issue? I wuld have service check it out. What year is your car? Mike
I spent 11 days on the track with my 2000 C4 Cab this year. I left the PSM on as I'm just starting out and feel safer with it on. I never had any problem exceeding 6500 rpm. I did feel the rev limiter at 7200 a couple of times, but I agree that you should probably have your car checked out. 6500 sounds pretty low to me for the limiter to turn on.
I was at the Porsche Driving Experience, I couldn't figure out why everyone kept pulling on me outta turn 7 and turn 10/11 at Road Atlanta, I'd be dog a$$ slow outta there and down the back straight after turn 7 it'd shutdown at 6500rpms and I'd have to shift. Mentioned it to Doc Bundy and he said it was probably the PSM... I was pretty sure I wasn't activating it though. Oh well.
When you switch off PSM, it automatically reactivates itself if certain physical parameters are exceeded AND you press the brakes. It will not reactivate itself just because you are slowing down or coming to a stop and hit the brakes
I have PSM and track my car.
PSM should not come on in the straight unless its raining and you hit a slick spot on your driving wheel(s).
I do feel the simulated limited slip while getting out of a corner at or close to the limit (drifting slightly) accelerating hard. The engine would hesitate a little.
7.3k over here.. and what a woooosh! I thank God smtms there IS a rev limiter, i just forget that the engine has reached its max limit, i guess the torque curve is flat at the upper rpms?
I took my car to 10k+ RPM when I mis-shifted from 3rd to 4th but went into Second...happened twice to me already. I think it did more damage to the tranny than engine. On cold mornings car pops out of seconds at times.
