Was it reported as a lemon? Or did you just have lots of problems with it? Carfax probably wouldn't pick up on the mechanical issues unless you actually reported the car as a lemon, under the lemon law.

Just FYI:

That' curious. We all know urbanxki's problems with the car. The tranny is not original, for crying out loud. Not that it's bad, the statement just so misleading.

Basically, what you are saying is that if a car was not reported as a lemon, but has had the engine replaced (just an example) because it blew up, the tranny replaced because it froze, rotors replaced because they warped, carfax will still say "no mechanical problems"? Then, what the h##l is carfax good for?

Hmmmm. Even more curious. The carfax report on the car is now not currently available. Maybe it's being edited?

Boy, oh, boy. And I was beginning to believe in the board posters who were saying that it's silly to buy a new car.

Yes, imho carfax can be misleading that way. What I would suggest, and what I did for the car I just bought (yesterday) is to call Porsche NA with the VIN number. They were able to tell me the recalls on the vehicle and if they had been taken care of. They also told me the Porsche option codes, so I was able to cross reference those with sites on the net, so I knew exactly what options the car had.

They also told me the dealership where the car had originally been sold. I then called that dealership with the VIN and asked for the service record for the car. They were very kind and gave me a complete run down of everything the car had been serviced for and the mileage of the car at the time of service. Luckily, the car had only been in for an oil change and to have the speaker in the door tightened.

It was a bit of leg work to do all that, but well worth it for the piece of mind I get while buying a 996.

AustinL, I am truly sorry your thread got hijacked I just tried to give you a link to tons of supple pics. And if you couldn't tell....GET IT! It's relatively cheap and worth it!

Palting, et al:
Remember you all, I had NOTHING to do with the Dealer listing that old car on e-bay. So nobody label me as underhanded, k?
AFAIK, Carfax is just for accidents and flood damage, right? I mean when they replaced the trans the first time, it just went into the Porsche service record...no mention of Carfax.
So I believe Carfax just saves you from buying a car that has a "totaled" or "salvaged" title....outwardly you all know these cars can look fine after repair but who wants one?

When my dealer bought me out of that car, one reason they did was to spare me from the poor resale value. I would only hope the new buyer is informed of the service record.

I wasn't blaing you, Urbanski. I apologize if I gave that impression. I was just surprised at how carfax worked. Not really surprised at the dealers. Some (emphasize some) car dealers are really sleazy.

To make amends for hijacking the thread, I wll take pics of my supple leather and post them tonight.

The other problem with CarFax is that it only covers few states, I cannot remember which ones right now. So, if anything happened in a state that Carfax does not cover, it will not show on the report. <img src="graemlins/oops.gif" border="0" alt="[oops]" />

Unless you go though a Lemon Law process a car won't show up as a lemon. Smart dealers with a problem car will/should agree quickly to buy back the car rather than having the title 'marked'. It sucks but that is why I, too, would rather buy new then get stuck with a piece of ...

Thanks for the pictures. I appreciate it.

The interior color of my C4S will be graphite gray, and I can't wait to see it. Today was kind of a sad day, because the dealer I am trading my car to came to pick it up today. I think that feeling will leave once the new car comes in January, but I am going to miss driving a Pcar for the time being.

As soon as the new one comes, I will post pics for everyone.
