looking for a 996......
test drove a 996 and 993 back to back. To my surprise, i liked the 996 better. Dealer had a 2000 with 13k miles for abpprox $40k. Sound like a good price?
Dealer said only 90 day warranty. It is not certified preowned. Do they not certify 2000 year cars?
I currently have an 2005 Audi S4, which is the family/daily driver and a 2002 Corvette Z06 which I would sell.
One of the reasons I am looking to go from the vette to a 911 is because we have a 15 month old child and I would like to be able to take her and my wife to car shows, trips, etc. Can you fit a baby seat in the bacK?
I've done searches on the forum regarding RMS. Dealer will be getting me service records and of course I will ask to take it for an independent ppi.
How much do ppi's usually run? Should I stay away from a 2000 because of RMS?
$40k is probably my max budget. I will probably use this car a couple times a year for track events and autocross. Does it make a good track car/autocrosser?
thanks in advance
Glenn

Should be no surprise you like the 996 better......it is the better car in most respects.
Check autotrader to get a feel on pricing.
Babies fit fine in the back.....this is why I got out of my C5.
PPIs should run $200-$400
RMS failures are unpredictable.......think of it like column lock in a Corvette, not a big expense.

I recently purchased a 996. AutoTrader is a great place to look, but there are mostly dealers there so the prices are a bit high, after all, they are asking prices. I thought Edmunds.com was probably the closest pricing to the market, but Kelly is useful too. NADA Guide seemed way high. Look on eBay too, inlcuding completed transactions.
I paid $225 for a PPI at a dealer. I have seen RMS repair costs listed as being $800 - $1,400 depending on who does it, but I have no personal experience.

LV: It's not 8, it's 6 years. Before you shoot back, here is the text from the Porsche web site:
"Every Porsche Approved vehicle comes with a comprehensive Warranty
- If sold while under the new car warranty, Coverage is up to 6 years or 100,000m/160,000km total , whichever comes first
- If sold once the new vehicle warranty has expired, Coverage is 2 years from the date of sale or up to 100,000m/160,000km, whichever comes first."
The ability to give a CPO is based on the in-service date. So it might be a 2000 that was purchased in August of 1999. Add 6 to that, and you cannot give the car a CPO.
Racecar, I sent you a PM.

Chris, please go back and re-read my post. I never said the coverage was 8 years. I was answering his question about covering a 2000. I said CPO coverage is eligible up to 8 model years. And you can't just add 8 to the inservice date. It is model year. His is a 2000. It will be CPO'ed as will the 1999's.
Make sure and do your homework first before giving bad info and calling me out with the "before you shoot back" comment. A simple search on the PCNA webstie for CPO cars will show you that you can buy a 99 CPO (there are 16 right now) which is the last year that can be CPO'ed (or as early as 97 depending on how they exactly count) since the 06 cars are the 8th model year over the 99. If you were to buy a CPO 99 right now, which you CAN, it would be covered for 2 years or 100K total miles whichever comes first.
FYI...there are some 98's that are CPO'ed on the PCNA site as well.

Dell, I like dishing out disinformation, as it gives you something to do... Seriously though, I must be honest and say I stand corrected. This is how it was described to me by my dealer, so this is a surprise to me. It's also makes be me happy, as I can now look at turbo's that are a little older.

Thanks Chris. I had nothing better to do
Besides, we all know how accurate dealers are these days. Heck, if it wasn't for this board, most dealers wouldn't know how to order certain options!

$40k sounds like a steal for 13,000 miles - Get a PPI, check the carfax to verify the mileage, and go for it. It's a no brainer.
Keep in mind, we're a suspicious lot - but with only 13k miles, I'm not sure I would spend the extra $1500 for CPO - if the body and the interior are indicative of a car with 13k, go write the check!

thanks for the great advice!!! Car looks new inside and out, drove like a new car, tires look good, brake pads, etc. of course I wilil do ppi.
I am curious why dealer won't CPO it. (they said it is too old, but we know that's not true) That is why I'm hesitant to pull the trigger, seems too good to be true.

If the car is in good shape, that is an excellent price. I share the concern of other posters regarding CPO. Does the dealer refuse to CPO the car or does he refuse to CPO the car at that price? If he refuses to CPO the car, that would certainly be a red flag. It doesn't mean that I wouldn't buy the car if they wouldn't CPO it, but I'd redouble my efforts in having the car checked out. This means that I would insist on being given access to the car's service records which I would read very carefully, and of course I'd have the car checked out very carefully by a Porsche certified mechanic.

Typically they wont CPO it because it's been in an accident.
