Default Cleaning MAF and tightening air intake bolts

Does anyone have experience cleaning the MAF and tightening the air intake bolts. I am having problems with CEL 1128 and have tried everything, cleaning the air box, changed to K&N filter, check the hoses for leak etc. People said I should clean the MAF and tighten the air intake bolts. Anyone know how or can provide guidance?

Changing to a K&N filter is NOT going to make the code go away and if anything it will induce the code since it is an oiled filter. Depending on what year your car is and miles it has yo may just acutally need...........drumroll.............a new MAF!

Remove the MAF and spray with carb cleaner, starter fluid or electronics cleaner. Let it dry and put it back in. Remove negative battery cable for a few minutes to reboot computer and then reconnect. You should be good to go.

2nd that. Clean it with electronics cleaner. You can find it at Radio Shack. If that does not work, new MAF. Easy install.

I just had to have mine replaced... i still have the old one. It looks brand new. Does anyone know if its possible to test it on the benchtop ?

Dell: You said "Depending on what year your car is and miles it has ..." Do these things age, or are they more prone to failure on older cars.. ? I have a C4 Cab with 12,000 miles.

Since it is so simple to replace, I would clean the old one and put it back in. Chances are that it is fine. You would them have a known good one as a spare which hopefully you will never have to use..

Is cleaning the MAF something that should be done regularly, say once a year....or only if there is a problem? I like the idea of 'smoother' but does it really make that big a difference? Meanwhile, I also read that some suggest running a fuel system cleaner like Techron through the car annually also.

I'm just wondering if most think these types of things are wise to do, or a waste of $$$$$.

Cheers.

Personally, I clean mine with every oil change. It will get dirty no matter what filter you use. Most often, the amount of dirt does not reach the threshold level where a CEL is generated but a dirty MAF can effect idle and smoothness even without the CEL. You;ll find it helps smooth any car out that uses the hot wire type MAF. I clean the 2 on my BMW regularly also.

New '99 c2 owner here...

Over the weekend I noticed when accelerating hard in any gear... once I got to about 5K rpm the car doesn't continue to accelerate smoothly. It sorta stumbles.

So I tonight I pulled the MAF sensor and cleaned it with carb cleaner. The element was a little dirty but not filthy. After letting it dry, I put it back in.

The car seems a bit smoother but the "stumble" is more consistent. Once I pulled into the garage, the idle fluctuated between 500-1100 rpm....almost stalling but didn't.

So is the MAF toast?

Dump the KN, clean the MAF, clear the code and you should be OK.

My car chokes in low speed on cold weather starts before I clean the MAF. It was good timing for me to do it two weeks ago because we are in the 20's these few days.

Cleaning the MAF is definitely easy and cheap. I'll do it every year.

The funny thing is that if you do a lot of maintenance you don't feel the car running any better. However, if you don't do it you'll find out little things that worry you from time to time like car not running smooth in cold starts.

Had some free time today so I took out the airbox and cleaned everything, boy does it get dirty. I cleaned out the throttle body, I cleaned the MAF, I cleaned the inside of the airbox, cleaned the outside of the airbox, tightened the throttle body bolts, and cleaned all the tubing. Made sure all the excess oil off the K&N was gone and put everything back together. Started the car, there was a little hesitation then in started, a little rough then quieted down. Purred like a kitten.

Hope this helps with the CEL. I will keep everyone updated.
