Post Spoiler, Retracatable Rear

How does this thing work? Can it be fixed to remain extended? <img src="confused.gif" border="0">

You could just hit the switch down by your left foot

or you can install an aerokit

Dont know about the 996 but it could be relatively similar.

On the 993,
1. automatically rises after 50mph
2. press a button to extend manually
3. keep it extended by easily disconnecting the power to the spoiler motor
4. replace with a fixed spoiler.

On the 996 the rear spoiler raises at 75mph and retracts at 37mph. You can raise the spoiler manually with one touch on the switch and it will stay up until it is manually closed again by holding the switch down until the spoiler retracts fully.

If you shut off the ignition with the spoiler in the up position it will stay up until the next time you start the car. Then, as soon as you exceed 37mph and then drop below 37 again, it will return to it's automatic cycle and close by itself.

If you wanted it to stay up all the time, you could raise it and then disconnect the motor as suggested above. I don't think that would cause any problems.

Well, everybody else has answered the question. My question now is, why would you want to have it up all the time? I think the 996 with the spoiler down is the classic 911 silhouete. Beautiful, IMO. The spoiler going up at speed is a concession to the demands of modern higher speeds, and I'm willing to accept that.

I do agree with the others on one point. If you want the spoiler up, then get the fixed spoilers, like the GT3. I personally like a more subtle ones, like the TT spoiler. How's that for unsolicited advice?

I added a spoiler switch from the Turbo to my console. The switch is to the left of the stereo below my PSM switch.
This way I do not have to reach for the switch at the kick plate. If I use the switch to raise the spoiler it stays up while driving and stays up when I shut down the engine. I does not retract until I restart the engine.

Question

How do you disconnect the spoiler motor? Is this a fuse inside the car or in the engine compartment?

On the 2002 996, the rear spoiler circuit is tied in with the rear deck locking mechanism. There is no individual fuse for the spoiler. You may only disconnect the power to the spoiler motor (unplug it inside the rear deck, requires the dissemble of the rear deck & spoiler) But if you do it this way, you will be alerted (spoiler failure)by the dash computer when the spoiler is trying to go up or down.

There is nothing classic about the silhouette compared to a 964...but then I would say that wouldn't I?
