As far as I know there are no servicable parts in the standard 996 gearbox. There are only a few servicable bits in the differential shown in the microfiche. It's a replace the whole thing when it stops deal, like replacing a Timex watch.

The gearbox in the Turbo and GT2 is based on the older 911's G50 design and is completely rebuildable. All parts inside it are available and things such as alternate racing gear ratios and steel syncros are available as well.

The 996TT engine block has part number 964.xxx.xxx.xx as well as the G50 style transmission. The regular carrera motor is a water cooled engine, the turbos have water cooled heads only, like the 959.

Loren, thanks for the infor. I spoke with Roger at PowerHaus II regarding the synchros, they are extremely expensive. First and second cost $1250 each, third though sixth are $275 each. He basically told me that they will just last longer than the stock brass synchros. My dealer already knows about the issue and they are willing to warranty the entire tranny! Thanks Again! -Mike

The availability of steel synchros from Powerhouse interested me, I wondered if other internal parts were available as well. So, I called Powerhouse and found that other internal gearbox parts are available for standard 996 gearbox but it has been very difficult for them to get any information about the relevant part numbers from Porsche.

Powerhouse also said they make there own special close ratio gear kit for the standard 996 gearbox...that would be a fun thing to have.
