I installed it to all my cars including my previous 993. Fortunate enough I have no experimence of using lojack. It is just like buying a insurance. You do not want to make an insurance claim unless something bad really happen to your car!!

It's good piece of mind...although I'm not so sure that I would want my car back. The main reason I got it was for the insurance discount.

I'm a retired Police Lieutenant from a large Northeast city-Lojack is BS-the only thing it is good for is the insurance discount. When it was first developed Lojack installed the receiver units for free in a select number of patrol units. Once the initial program was over each city had to buy the receivers. Needless to say the cities always manage to use the money elsewhere. Not for nothing-do you really want your car back after some animal stole it?

I did not buy the lojack as my brother in law, who is in the insurance industry, suggested that the insurance discount was not worth it. He also commented that it was unlikely I would want my car back after it was stolen and dismantled. <img src="graemlins/cussing.gif" border="0" alt="[grrrrrrr]" />

So far we have thumbs up from most responses, and 2 thumbs down from an ex-poilce man and an insurance guy.

The insurance guy says no because he does not want to discount your premium. Comission sales.

The cop does not care if your car is stolen, he is de-sensitized against theft.

By the way, we do not have a choice of taking the car back or giving it up after an accident or theft, it is the ins. co. decision.

I say get it. It actually costs the dealership where you are buying it approx. $365.00, try to get it for $400-$450.....

Good Luck.

I have it only because it was already installed in my car when I purchased it used. USAA gives me approx. $85 a year discount for having it.

Have not had any experience with it...yet! Let's hope it stays that way...

I talked to a fellow who used sell for Lojak. Although he liked the company, he said it's not worth it for the same reason the policeman gave: There are very, very few police cars with the detectors.

My insurance company mandated a Boomerang2 recovery system before they wrote me a policy. $800 canadian ($550 usd) for unit+install, $13 cad ($8.50 usd) monthly monitoring charge.

Uses cellphone triangulation to determine location of your car. If your car is moving and your keychain transponder is not present in the vehicle, the company will immediately call you and start tracking the vehicle. If they cant get hold of you within 20 min, they notify the police and give them details of the car's current location.

Very high recovery rate (+90%?). Coverage is entire NA. Not sure if it is available in the U.S.

I'm still torn. I've always held the common theory "if stolen, I don't want it back".

But... I'm told that LoJack has a 2-4 hour average recovery. Sure, that is a nice joy ride in a 996, but rarely enough time to strip it. In contrast, I've heard horror stories about cars recovered after weeks (most insurance makes you wait 30 days before "settling", for whatever that's worth) and having to sit for a couple months while car was being rebuilt from being trashed. So, you lose your car for a couple months, then get back a "repairable wreck" that is worthless resale and never the same.

I don't have LoJack, but that with leasing is starting to look real attractive....
