Brand new 996 fuel gauge problem
Hi guys.. I'm new to the forum having picked up my new 2002 Porsche 996 Coupe the other day.
It's in Seal Grey Metallic. Awesome car.
My only disappointment was running out of gas on the second day. The fuel gauge and computer showed a 1/4 tank and 64 miles range respectively and then it died. I noticed I'd done 296 miles since new. I filled it up, drove another 275 miles and the same thing happened (didn't run out of gas this time I was watching it) the fuel gauge stopped at 1/4 tank and the computer said 65 miles to go. I filled up and put 16 gallons of fuel in after 278 miles.
Anybody else experience this?

Hi guys..
On my first tank I averaged 17mpg. On my 2nd tank it increased to 18mpg. I had a gallon left in the tank when I filled up.
Why do you think the speedo will be affected?

With those readings off the computer, that would seem correct. Just as a matter of curiosity did you check "miles to empty' on the computer when you new you were running out? <img src="confused.gif" border="0">

Thanks again for getting back to me on this..
Yes.. I did check the miles to empty, particularly after I had ran out of gas to make sure that it didn't happen again. On both occasions the "miles to empty" figure stopped counting down at 64 miles! That's really why I ran out of gas the first time because I was looking at that figure and the fuel gauge. The second time round I made sure that I watch the trip meter and when it got to 275 miles I knew that I could only have around 1 gallon in the tank and the 65 miles to empty figure was wrong. I went to fill up and I put 15.9 gallons in.
Here's something else.. Stem is correct - the speedo is running faster!! I went by one of those "your speed is" radars by the side of the road and it displayed my speed at 41mph and yet my Speedo was reading 51mph. Very weird.

Hi, found a fix !
my 996 got low on fuel and the fuel light came on, after filling up I notice the fuel light remain on and the needle stuck near the empty, tried several home fixes which proved negative, By luck I live with a steep driveway so I filled to the maximum and left my car for 24hrs nose down causing the tank to appear over filled , after the 24hrs I was happy to see the fuel had reset to full, brill ! Was not sure if this was just luck or not. A month or so later, again fuel light came on and once again it stuck, so again I repeated the procedure which again worked a treat. Since this time I have avoided the low fuel area and all in good.
However it work for me twice and hopefully it will help others but you will need a really steep angle for it to work.
