Having lived through the horrible inaccuracy of the 993 oil level indicator
, I was wondering if the 996 oil level indicator is any more reliable i.e can you rely on it?

If you mean the lights on the dash, mine always seems to be accurate when I compare it to the dipstick. I think I read somewhere where they did away with the dipstick on the TT motor, so PAG must be pretty confident in the indicator's accuracy.

I actually asked my dealer service manager the same question (given how difficult it is to use the dip stick - i.e., the manual gives specific instructions about how long the car must have been driven, how long it must rest, etc., before taking the measurement) and he told me the dash meter is very accurate and what they rely on when servicing the cars.

In defense of 993's, I've become very comfortable in trusting my oil gauge. In the 2 1/2 yrs of ownership of a 95 993, I've always checked the dipstick and gauge, and when my gauge was reading well, so was the dipstick - no discrepancies whatsoever!

My observations on the 996 oil level indicator are not so comforting. It always seems as if the oil indicator reads on the low side of the dipstick. This is regardless of the time the car sits after running.
In fact it would seem the previous owner or dealership filled the car with oil based on the oil guage, the result was oil to the top of the dipstick tip. The guage never fell below the full mark when warmed, and when cold (or sitting for a while) the oil guage was off the top.
