Red face rant., but short

Just finished watching the Speed Channel story on Victory by Design on Porsche. They start right out with Dr. Porsche's commitment to racing at the thing that drives the company. Their attitude of winning at all costs. The fabulous racing cars of the 60's through early 90's. 904, 908, 910, 917 series, 956, 962. What a line up. Then the show ends on the production cars and little else in the late 90's. What has happened to this company to loose its focus so thoroughly? If you are listening at PCNA or
PAG, it is time to go back racing at the top of the game. You can only live so long on past glories. <img src="graemlins/cussing.gif" border="0" alt="[grrrrrrr]" /> <img src="graemlins/crying.gif" border="0" alt="[crying]" /> <img src="graemlins/soapbox.gif" border="0" alt="[soapbox]" />

Red face

I think you're absolutely right about the heritage that Porsche has built. I remember the days when there was some kind of article in AutoWeek, every week...even in the days when it was more of a newspaper. Now weeks go by w/o any mention of Porsche accomplishments.

But Porsche is one of the more if not the most profitable automobile manufacturers (or assemblers) in the world. They weren't always that way, tho. As much as I dislike their marketing approach I would still rather have them in business than not. Also racing competition is being backed by some very heavy hitters.

I'm guessing that when Porsche gets their changes done in the 04-06 model years where a wider variety of vehicles are available, they may turn their attention to racing. In the old days successful racing actually helped buy cars. Today racing can be more accurately compared to "image advertising" where it's very difficult to establish a return on investment...and today everything boils down to money...and that's the difference between the Porsche family of old and the congolomerate we have today.
