Post Need to ship a hard top...

Just bought a h/t on ebay for $600, but its in Scottsdale AZ, and I'm in NYC. The seller quoted $700 to ship it. Does that sound outrageous? I spent almost that much to have the whole car shipped up from TX. Anyone have any ideas?

Here's the thing: It is very likely too large to ship via FedEx or UPS regular service. I would call them and find out for sure. UPS I believe has LTL or palletized shipping available, but I am not sure how competitive their pricing is.

The reason your seller is quoting you so much money is because he is no doubt going to send it via common carrier / LTL shipping. These shipments are based on weight vs. volume.

The problem with the aluminum top is that it takes up a large volume but weighs very little. For this you get penalized in shipping costs. If you want to get a better idea of what market prices are for shipping something like that, look up "LTL shipping" or "Freight Consolidator" in yahoo or some electronic yellow pages.

The other thing you can do is call your dealer (or any other dealer) and ask how the aluminum tops get shipped to them.

Your best bet is a freight forwarding company. I've had 2 hardtops shipped this way.

Your seller drops it off at a terminal (there is one by every majoy USA airport) and you can pick it up near Newark or JFK.

The last time I did it was about $165.
