You might check Brey Krause. Don't know if they have Halon size that fits in pocket, but I have one mounted in front of passenger seat and it's not intrusive at all....moves with the seat. Extingisher and mount (for 996) came from BK.

Don,

Does your cab have power passenger seats? Here's what I ordered as a mount, Brey Krause, for power seats. I hope I did not order the wrong thing!

Paulting, I think the bar you have is for a pre 996 model whrein you just remove the two forward allen screws holding the seat to the rail, then insert the bar so the holes match and replace the allen screws....then mount the extinguisher clamp to the center of the bar, etc.etc.

When you do this on a pre 996 you lose the ability to slide the seats back and forth on the rails.

The mounting bar for the 996 is very different in that it is mounted to a cross member underneath the seat and sticks out in front of the seat just above the floor. This allows seat movement back and forth manually or with power. My 996 has manual back and forth only because it gives a greater range of movement.

So the short of it is I don't think the bar you showed will work on a 996.

Here's the website for the Brey-Krause automotive stuff.

Good luck.
PS: the red clamps that attach to the mounting bar and the extinguisher fit the bar you displayed and my unit.

Good luck, Don

What is the best type to use in a car?

I have seen prices for a Kidde Halon unit for about $90. What is the difference between that unit and the halon unit for $160 (given the same size)? Is there a special application that is certified to carry in a vehicle?

Could be that with the more costly one you get a mounting kit as well???? O/T difference in size I don't know what else would affect cost. I know that chrome ones are more expensive than the red metal ones. That's about it...

I just want to make sure I am not paying twice as much b/c I am getting from a place that specializes in the motorsport industry as opposed to a place that specializes in fire ext. equipment.

<edit> I can order from Grainger for ~$85 or I can order from Drivewerks (Pelican) for ~$114.

FYI

Got the skinny on the halon v halotron. I was told that the halotron needs twice as much material to put out the same fire as halon.

As I was the lucky guy who used his extinguisher on my first track day with the new car, I was really anxious to get mine refilled.

There was a fire extinguisher place on Cape Cod, so I drove in. The techs said that they were just getting into refilling Halotron (Halon not available due to enviormental concerns, and refilling more involved then standard chemical refill). Also said the could give me a new 2.5 lb Halatron for $65. Less then new since they got my empty. Not the same brand "Amerex" but fit directly into the Amerex holder on the Brey-Krause mount, and the ingredient specs were identical. The Amerex unit was much more expensive, but I can attest to it's working as advertised. I'm not sure there is that much difference between the units. The Amerex had aluminum actvation hardware, the new brand had stainless.

B-K mount is great(as are harness bar and belt mounts). It's all about safety.

Don,

I just got my BK mount in yesterday. How hard was the install? I see they want you to remove the seat, is it possible to mount without removal?

TIA

Sloth,

I did mine in about an hour. Probably can do it in 15 minutes now that I know what I'm doing.

Retrospectively, it can be done without removing the seat. But I think you will get skinned knuckles and a permanent twist to your neck afterwards .

Removing the seat is no biggie. The fronts of the track have plastic covers that pop right off. This will expose a bolt that will require a star socket (got mine from wal-mart). Place the seat all the way back to give yourself room, then remove both front bolts. Then place the seat all the way forward to remove the back bolts. Then tilt the back of the seat forward, then tilt the whole seat back, and you have the whole seat bottom exposed and accessible. This way, you don't have to disconnect anything else, and there are no exposed wires etc. Slide in the center pin and place nut, place the two screws and nut, replace the seat and the plastic caps, bolt in the fastener, fasten the extinguisher, start a fire and put it out. Easy.

I couldn't do it w/o removing seat..neither could my son even tho he has lon thin fingers. We ended up removing seat which is no biggie as Palting suggests. So many of these types of things can be done in 1/10th of the time after you've done the first one. It's a nice unit and thankfully you can move the seat fore and aft, unlike the earlier BK mounts.
