Post 2002/3 Motor in a 99-01 Car

Anyone know if the new 3.6 motor will easily install into the 99-01 chassis without any major "hassles". I know the electronics/ECU would be different but assuming you had the ECU would everything just "plug right in". Any input here?

MY99 are not E-gas. Transmission is reportedly different in MY02. Why would you want to do it anyway? Replacement cost for a new engine for MY99 is almost 20K-even a wrecked 02 with a low mileage engine will command top dollar. With dismall resale on all 996 models wouldn't it be easier just to buy a new car?

Isn't it true that the 3.6L is the same engine block as the 3.4L but bored out to increase displacement? Are there companies out there that can bore out the 3.4L to 3.6L? I'm not planning to do this but it would seem it's an easier route then switching to a new block. If it can be down on the 993(have 3.8 powerkits) the 996 mite as well can. Mike

tbr623,

Just one correction... there are some MY99's with E-gas. Most C2's did come without it but C4's were the first to get it.

I agree with your point... you could buy a new car for the price of the engine upgrade. If he wants more power he should trade-up to an 02 or 03, or better yet a TT.

Just so you dont think I am unaware of the economics of my question, There is a complete 2002 motor available for $10K, I have a 2001 996 with approximately $30K worth of modifications associated with Club Racing. Therefore I am into the car for approximately $105K. It would actually be much more exensive to reverse all thats been done, take a beating on a trade in and then start the whole modification process over on a 2003. I could just change motors under the "udating/backdating" provision of the PCA Club Racing rules.

Hi Dennis. Just out of curiosity what mods did you do to your car because I think people would be interested in what you've done. I've been itching away at my car so maybe someday it'll be a dedicated track car. Regards. Mike

Hello, gotta figure how you guys add the car infor to the "post" as your set-up, till then here is the info:

2001 996 C2
Full Aero Kit(added)
GT-3 Seats
Full GT-3 Factory Suspension including adj sways.
Gemballa SS, Headers, Cats and Mufflers
Fabspeed Intake
B+M Shifter
Full Halon Fire Suppression
Electrical Cut-off
D.A.S. Roll Bar, Painted to Match Car.
Schroth Harnesses both sides
Window net
Two Sets BBS Race Magnesiums, 18inch.
Couple of "make it pretty" additions as well.

Of course, the car is "set up" as in lowered to 10mm higher than supercup specs both front and rear, corner balanced and agressive alignment.
