No, they don't automatically - but neither did the ones on my MINI. You had to select the intermittent setting, and then it would wipe or not wipe based on rain. The 996 is similar - there's the fast/slow setting (up on the stalk) and intermittent (down on the stalk). When its on intermitten, the dial seems to control frequency somewhat, but on the slowest setting it sometimes wipes once/20 sec or so and sometimes once/2-3 seconds if the rain is heavier.

Its weird.

My wife has the rain sensor on her Lexus. God I hate that feature, first off it scares the bejeezus out of me half the time and second I don't always want the wipers on. Especially if it's nice out, and you just had the car cleaned, and you go under an overpass and water drips on the windshield, the friggin wipers go on...arrrrgggg.
