Default Anybody imported a porsche into Canada before?

I found the perfect porsche that I want and I am in Canada. I wonder if there is any Canadians in this board that have imported their P car from the states. Any advice on this procedure will be much appreciated. And also, I wonder if it is difficult to change the speedometer reading from mph to kph. Thanks.

Hi First off , become a member, this site has soo much to offer.

Ok now to your question, I guess you need to ask your self a few questions, Is it the perfect car, are you willing to go look at it, and it might not be as good as a deal as you can find here. I will share with you the info i know, because i was going to do the same thing before i ordered one. Ok If your in ontario you will have to pay the PST and the GST 15%, now you will also pay 6.1% duty fee, then you will have around a $ 400.00 fee for them to make sure its up to Canadian law. You will have to add daytime running lights and its very easy to switch the digital speedo no money or tools involved. There are some other costs like shipping , cost of you flying/driving down.If its the perfect car and you don't mind a little bit of a hassel I say go for it.............I ordered a new one because in the end it was not worth the time and effort. good luck and ask away if you have any more questions.

I second that. GST and PST would have to be paid any way on the lease of the payment of the car. Even with the 6.1% duty it's worth it with some cars specially GT3's which are hard to comeby up here. I have been looking for 6 Months. Sould be able to pull the triger next spring.

Good luck

Pierre

wow, thanks for the reponse iun such a short time frame. I am actually in Vancouver,BC and the reasons that lead me into buying one from the states is mainly because of the strong dollar we have and the differences are quite significant.

I know there is the 6.1 duty I have to pay but I guess my question is if it is diifficult to pass the vehicle inspection or do I have to spend a lot of money to make it conform to the Canadian standards.

The digital speedo, but it also has the mph reading on the dial, is it possible to change that to kph? Thanks again for the help.

It's true sometimes it is a good deal to buy stateside, You can change the entire cluster, they are all over the place used, once installed your local P-car dealer can get it to work properly via their computers. Some say in order for the day time running lights its just a relay, I know this to be false, I have a CND 996 and i removed that relay ..cuz i dislike the drl, my high beams and rear plate lights do not work properly. Our $ is pretty strong at this time, but you know its only going to get stronger, so if you can wait ..wait. One of the good things about owning a porsche in canada is they do hold their value allot more the out southern neighbors

You might be able to get away with keeping the same gauge cluster and putting new (metric or km/h) gauge face plates. Check out http://www.cargraphic.com or search online and on eBay.

Does the 6.1% alsao applies to new cars ??
Looking at Porsche webs-te you can get a base 997S at (starting) US$79,100 or CAD$ 119,000.
This is an implied rate of 1.5044 !!!! This AM it's trading at 1.1880.
So take 79,100 * 1.1880 (FX rate) * 1.061 (duty) = CAD$99,703 !!!
CAD$20k cheaper...well worth the trouble.
I agree with kilrgt the loony (nickname for the CAD$) is going up.

I'm telling you, a slighlty used 996 Turbo in the US is looking pretty darn tempting.
