Default Gas Cap

The gas attendant forgot to put the gas cap back on my car, and I can't go back to the gas station. Do you know if an off the rack gas cap will fit? If yes which one? What is the danger of driving without a cap until the replacement from Porsche arrives on monday? Thanks

Eventually not having it will fire off a Check Engine Light. Not having it tells the emissions system that there's a leak in the loop. Other than that, there's no real danger. Don't know about an "off the rack" fix. Should be ok 'til Monday, but I'd limit it's use so as to avoid the CEL.

BTW, it's OK to tell us you left it off....we all have senior moments!

You must not have the cord that attached to the cap so it hangs? Saved me many senior moment times!

You might as well go for the $40 plastic aluminum look gas cap. You really have to file that under "what's the point".

I got the Tequipment cap recently. If you want I can let you have my original gas cap for free. Send me your Fedex account number or mail me a prepaid envolope.

Just kiddin of course. But, you most post a pic of it on your car so we can all see that beauty of a gas filler cap.

Thanks for your responses. My dealer sent me a new gas cap over the weekend. It turns out that my original cap was not attached to the car which is probably why the attendant (NJ only has full service) forgot to put it back on, the new one has the rubber cord which i can now fasten to the car. (I bought a used '99 996)

My CEL is still on, do you think it will eventually go off by itself or does the computer need to be reset?

Do you have an OBDII reader? If so you can reset it. They can be had for under a $100 and are a great tool to own. Also, you can go by your friendly local AutoZone, etc., and they will read it for free and clear it. Just get the codes if you do have them do it so we (if they dont) can explain them to you.

Best of luck!

I am embarrassed to admit that I did in fact succumb to mod fever and purchase the Tequipment cap. It looks really nice--so nice in fact, that the next mod will have to be a lucite replacement for the tank filller cover! Perhaps a mini version of the transparent rear decklid on the latest Ferraris.....(Eric bumperplugs, do you hear me?)

Actually I've been thinking of doing this mod. When you send the pics, please do a tech writeup on the install, along with various pictures throughout the process, of course!
