Misfire?

Sorry guys, another stupid question, hope you won't mind. Why a sticky hydraulic tappet or tappets would cause a misfire or backfire upon acceleration? Thanks in advance.

IF THE TAPPET IS STICKING IN A POSITION TO HOLD THE VALVE OPEN IT COULD CAUSE THIS.

Thanks for your reply. However, I am wondering if you could give me a fuller picture of why a sticky tappet causing the valve to open would cause a misfire or backfire upon acceleartion. Thanks again.
