Default Please help on this 996 price

Stopped by the dealer this afternoon and they have a 2004 40th Anniversary Limited Edition #949 996 with special Silver paint and brush alumium wheels, all Porsche options including Nav, full leather interior, special edition steering wheel, and Porsche Crests on seats. Asking price is $90K with 3,300 miles on the clock. The owner returned the car back to the dealer because the paint on upper part of the hood is thicker and the owner said the car was partially resprayed and he told the dealer he wanted his money back. I told the salesman I will pay $80K for it and he said he will consider. Is it a good price? Will the respray (dealer admitted there was a respray involved) hurt the value of the car? Please help as I am thinking about pulling the trigger on it. Thanks for any input.

80K is still too much for that car. There were guys posting recently that it was to be had in the low 70s! Heck, it blue-books out at $77K full retail.

As for the respray....why was it done?

The dealer massed up the hood while detailing the car before delivery. The clean up guy did not use a buffer correctly for the job. The new owner used some kind of paint reader to check the car out one day and that's how it was discovered. He took it back to the dealer and told them he was sold a damaged goods and wanted the money back or he will sue.

I also think 80k is too much. You can find Porsche approved/certified '04s in the high $60s to mid $70s all day long. And I don't think the 40th Anniv is bringing any more money. Also, is the one you are looking at Porsche approved/certified? As far as hurting the value, are you buying this car as a collector or as a driver? Anytime a car has been respray will hurt the value somewhat. But for a daily driven vehicle, i doubt it will be much. But if you plan on putting this car in storage and hoping someday it will be on barrett jackson, then i wouldn't buy it. Most importantly, find out for sure if it was indeed just a simple respray. Do not take a car salesman word for it. If you cannot find an expert to inspect it, ask the dealer to put what they claim in writing. I am no expert but anytime a dealer volunteering info like this worries me...

Default Wow

The dealers got around $20,000 of price support from PCNA to move these after they sat on the lot for a long long time......with respray, I would be closer to $60,000 to consider it, if that

Agree with the rest, $70K is a bit much.

I just spent 11 minutes on Edmunds (Autotrader) and I found the following 40th Anniv cars. Take your pick!

Price Miles
67,900 4,030
67,500 17,600
69,996 18,980 MODS
69,999 11,963
72,995 12,685
73,900 10,200
73,900 4,372
74,995 7,800
77,200 Not listed
79,800 3,255
79,900 8,000
79,995 3,820
82,000 3,200

Given the range listed above, $80,000 way too high!

Do a Power Search on Edmunds use Porsche - 911 - 2004 - search any distance from your zip - silver. I am not affiliated with Edmunds or Autotrader. Just wanted to give you some options.

I'd offer 65 and if they come back with 70 give it some thought. They are crazy to think they would bring 90 (or even 80 for that matter)! Heck, most bought NEW for less than that. If they call you back and say "well, I guess we can swing 80" then tell them you did some research and found almost a dozen for less than that an avg price of 70 (courtesy of Tim).

I was offered a new 40th for $76 last August. There was at one point, I believe a $15K PCNA incentive to dealers.

The stickers on the 40th's were around 90-94K. In order to unload them and with incentives from Porsche, the typical discounts last year were 18-22K off of sticker, maybe even a little more (for brand new cars). The 40th is a great package (I considered buying one early last year), but fortunately or unfortunately a used one is not really worth much more than a normal coupe. I'd say you need to be somewhere in the 60's for a deal to make any sense.

I bought mine with 4K miles in December 04 for 75K. Your dealer price is way too much.

An old salesman's trick is to ask well above retail for a used, excuse me, preowned car. The novice car buyer will then offer thousands below the asking price and the Dealer after hand wrenching deliberation, agrees to the buyer's offer. The used car salesman will then typically congratulate the buyer on negotiating a really great deal. The really great deal happens to be at or a little over full retail.

Almost all Dealers use this technique. Last year I was shopping for a used Corolla for my son. We found a car that we liked with an asking price of $12K. The Dealer advertised a "blowout " sale on all remaing preowned cars, and the car we liked was reduced to $9, 999 provided we bought that day. I did a quick KBB and Edmunds search on a Corolla with the mileage and options on the car we liked. It turned out that the retail for the car in excellent condition was $7900. I offered the Dealer $7500 and he accepted.

I passed on a car like this (40th anniversary). The price I got was in the mid 60's. 80k seems way too high.....
