Default variocam solenoids

A couple of questions about 996 variocam solenoids...

1. Whats the symptoms of them being faulty?

2. Can they be changed without removing the engine, and whats involved?

3. is there any thing else that can cause the same symptoms?

TIA

Depends how they fail I would think. On mine, one of them was stuck in the high rev position so the idle was pretty rough. No need to remove the engine to replace them but the cam cover has to come off.

I AGREE WITH COLLIN,ROUGH IDLE WOULD LIKELY BE PRESENT,ALSO CEL FOR CAM POSITION(IIRC).ON EARLY CAR THE CAMS NEED TO BE REMOVED BUT THE LATER CARS WITH VARIOCAM PLUS YOU COULD REPLACE JUST THE SOLENOID.
