wait a minute, does the fan suck cold air in or does it suck the hot air out?

Sucks outside air into the compartment.

has to do both... hot out, cold in. Out the top works better b/c it is aided by convection.

Maybe I'm missing something, but the fan always runs when the engine is running on the turbo. When the engine is off, it only runs when the engine compartment is hot.

As far as opening the hatch after a DE session, the point of the fan is to keep the hot (mainly exhaust heat) air out of the engine compartment. Opening the hatch shuts the fan off (of course) and lets the heat pass over the engine and components, but escape out the hatch by convection. Probably a breakeven scenario - the only upside would be avoiding running the fan for long periods with the engine not running.

The dealer told me the turbos run hotter and the fan is on way more often

What blows, sucks. If it exhausts air, it must be pulled in from somewhere. If it admits air, it must exit somewhere.

ah, i thought you meant it does double duty throught the same fan opening.

what you are saying makes sense. convection helps if the fan sucks the air out but apparently it does the opposite of what you are thinking.

Potentially it could, if you rigged the fan to spin in either direction.....

Are you saying it sucks and blows at the same time? Hmmmmmm. Are we still talking about fans?
