Default How to fix bumper scratches

Hey all,
Got backed into last night by an SUV. Left some minor scratches above the front plate on my 996. Was wondering if there is a quick fix that will make my baby look beautiful again! Thanks for the help!

I dropped a ladder that grazed my rear bumper. I cleaned it off with a towel and soapy water, rubbed it out with rubbing compound, then used Meguiar's scratch-x followed by sealer/glaze (#7 I think) and wax. Only thing that's left is a very slight depression in the plastic that can only be seen if you know where it is. If your scratches are through the paint, you can get a paint pen and try to match. If your paint is metallic, you're probably SOL. Best of luck to you.

If I could tell the ladder story, maybe you could work your way up to a confession :P

I was working in the yard and had put on some gloves with garden soil on them. Walked by the p-car and noticed a spot or something and instinctively reached out to rub it off. I didn't think about the fact that I was wearing dirty gloves so I got rid of the spot but left a bunch of fine scratches in the clearcoat

Dumbass move

I was putting up a basketball hoop on the garage. After sternly lecturing the kids about not shooting hoops with the garage door open, I hoisted up the ladder with the door open and dropped it on my car...

That makes me think of something my Dad would've done when I was kid.

I'm having a bit of bad day but this little thread has cheered me considerably

Hi Lee,

I need to fix some scratches on my wife's RR. You mentionned a 1- rubbing compound, 2- the sractch x and 3- the sealer/glazer #7.

Are 1 and 3 also Meguiars products ?

Thanks,

Marc

Yes on 3 and no on 1, but: Rubbing compound is generic. It's a little coarse. You might start with a polishing compound, or just Meguiar's fine cut cleaner. The sealer/glaze is good for fine scratches on it's own too. I took a fine scratch off my taillight lens with it.

Meguiar's has a decent website and their stuff is available just about everywhere.

PS: Practice on the beater first!

I wouldn't have though about practising on the beater first. Thanks for the tip.

3m fine cut compound is a relatively light compound to use. You're usually better of using the least abrasive compound or polish first, then if that doesn't work try something more abrasive. Also only compound the immediate are your working on, compounding may introduce paint marring that you can't polish out.
