Question Windshield Polishing: Meguiar's?

My wife's Bimmer has a network of fine scratches that only show up when the wipers are used in a light rain... looks almost like ice crystalizing when the wipers pass over them.

I saw the thread about Eastwood's products, but I wandered down to Napa Auto Parts to see what they had. The guy (actually the kid) said I should use Meguiar's Fine Cut Cleaner on it.

Anyone think that is a good idea?

Contact an automotive glass shop. They will have a better idea of what will work best on tempered automotive glass.

Save your money on the fine cut cleaner it won't do anything to help. It is designed and engineered for clear coat paint not glass. Your best bet is to used a glass specific polish and more than likely you will need a rotary polisher/sander to apply it. Most glass shops have a host of different polishes they use. Personally I would take the car to the glass shop and for about $50-75 bucks let them polish it. Be for warned the success rate is very small. If you can feel the scratches at all with your finger nail, then it is highly unlikely any polish will fix the problem. Reputable shops can give you a good idea of the chance of being able to improve the problem.

Apply some rain x to see if that helps. Also, are you sure it's not your wiper?

Difficult to imagine it's the wiper, the scratches go in all directions. They resemble the sum of dancing car wash felt and washing/rubbing with window cleaner...

Would a glass shop be able to polish out light pitting on the windshield?

Light pitting as in small rock chips? Those have to be filled with resin which is sold at auto parts store for $10.

Give Rain X as it's supposed to seal surface to repel rain. Get those towelette ones which works great. $1-2 for a pack.

BMW wipers suck. I replaced them with some cheapo's from Walmart and the problem went away on my 740IL.

Lee...Have her drive without the windshield. Much better visibility. You won't need the wipers and she'll always be wide awake while driving. But, come to think of it...this is Oregon, so maybe it wouldn't be a good idea after all.

Disregard this post.

You can clean/polish the windshield with BonAmi and a terry towel. It might remove some of the finer scatches. I have used it with some success. I use it to clean before I put on RainX.

I only notice the pitting driving into the sun. If you look very closely you can see it. I am going to take it by a glass shop and see what they think.
