Maybe the aerodynamics of the 997 are significantly different than the 996 and such a large spoiler is not needed. It looks similar to the fixed spoiler that was used on the 993tt so maybe its just keeping with that theme. I noticed in a couple of the shots the spoiler looks like it has braces on the back (maybe for adjustment for determine the optimum aero efficiency). Maybe they were testing something else and the smaller spoiler was needed to test other aero changes? Maybe they did it to try and disguise the car. The possibilities are endless. You could compare to F1 testing where they even use last years car to test electronics and new parts for the new cars, because the cars not necessarily have to be the same to get valuable test data from them.

The “turbo” looks like the test mule that has been caught on film for a couple of years now. I noticed the film never shows the two cars in the same frame, therefore the film of the “turbo” it could have been shot a long time ago when they were still developing the aero package and/or really attempting to disguise the car.

I believe that may be intentional. Perhaps they want to see how the car behaves near the limit when driven 'a bit amateurish'.

You know, by the people who need PSM to be "Please Save Me".

Chris,
Yes, I was at LRP on Thursday (couldn't stay for Friday due to work emergency).

As I was telling people in the pits, you could put a chimp (look at me, case in point) behind the wheel of that car and it would be fast. Gotta love those Porsche engineers when they design Cup cars.

It is stock, ~247hp 5 speed, so I can't drag anyone down the front stretch (not even Boxsters....well maybe a 914). But that's OK, I really only like the twisties anyways, as it makes getting up at 3AM and driving to the track worth it.

Riad,
I can't remember who told me that PSM is 'Please Save Me'; I just thought it was funny. I've been told it does what is says it does.
