Default Car & Driver Long Term 03 C4S Test

Driving home from work this evening I saw a 996 C4S... pretty rare here in Bengals' Country. .. and if I do say so ... very attractive even by my slanted 993 standards.

At home checked the mail and recieved the latest C&D issue and noted the article on their long term test of an '03 C4S. Pretty glowing review... and if I am not mistaken C&D stated it was their fastest long term test car ever (1/4 mile measure I believe).

Could never part with the 993, but maybe another C4S is in order someday.

I truly believe that the C4S is the best value in the Porsche lineup.

Mine has been the best, fastest, most reliable daily f-ing driver I've ever owned! When the warranty is up, I may just keep it, it's that good!

Although they were generally right, car and driver do spout a load of crap

apparently 911 brakes last for ever

in the sports sedan test, the top 3 picks were a honda, a nissan and a lexus, with Audi, BMW and MB all coming in as worse. i nearly cancelled my subscription just based on that

Car & Driver have been long time Porsche fans. They have always enjoyed the tests on the latest and greatest Porsche to come from Germany.

Most American mags, including Car and Driver, are Porsche fans. I mean, if your work was all about cars, wouldn't you be a Porsche fan, too? It's an "exotic" performance car that is actually within the financial capabilities of a lot of Americans, both to obtain and maintain. It's when they do comparisons, like the "Best Sports Sedan", that they lose me. Their priorities and mine don't coincide. They probably don't coincide with most car fanatics either. I think they set up their priorities based on the everyday average joe, and try to cover everyone from the pick-up truck man to the Viper-man. That's where they falter. There is no everage everyday Joe. I just read between the lines, and actually find I can get a lot of info from them.

Which issue of C&D, I checked Aprl, March and Feb and did not see a LT review of a C4S.

May issue - its in front of me now

Although after my experience with porsche GB today, I may start recommending buying aston martins or TVR's as a more reliable alternative to Porsche

Hmm. No surprise here. Traded my '95 993 for an '03 C4S-best move I have ever made in the car world. I'm in Cali right now on a short vacation, just wishing I had my baby with me.

I am addicted to my 03-C4S. It's my third 911 and it's very good. So good that it is dangerous. Let me explain.

The first 911 was a 1971 911S that I bought in 1980 after college and kept for 5 years, until my son showed up. The 911S was fun, but problematic - bad gearbox, oil leaks, exciting to drive, spun it a couple of times on mountain switchbacks, FUN, FUN.

My second Porsche, was a 93 964-C2. Kept it for 12 years, sold last summer when I got the C4S. Very reliable, the only problem was replacing the clutch at 70k miles. Much more forgiving than the 911S, I never managed to spin it, even on a skid pad, or on a track. I regret selling it, should have kept it.

Now, my third one is an 03-C4S. Drove it all winter long in Boston, with snow tires and we had lots of snow and ice. That car handles so well, it's like it's on rails. On curves, you can feel the initial understeer, then the nose tucks in and the AWD pulls you through the turn. A curve that I could take with the 964 at 50mph on the edge, i can take it in C4S at 70mph with a lot of margin. It's the wider tires, the AWD, the PSM kicked in only once when I hit a patch of ice on an exit ramp.

That's why I say, the C4S is addictive and it's dangerous, it gets you to go so much faster that one might become too confident.

I will keep it 10 years until the 4 door Porsche comes out in 2009. It wil lbe shown at the Frankfurt auto show in Spetember.

Alain
