Default 996 quality

I happened to see a copy of Consumer Reports in which they listed the quality of various car makers. I didn't expect to see the 996 in there because of its low sales volume, but it was there along with the Boxster. The overall quality of the Boxster was below average, but the 996 was above average. As a matter of fact the quality of the 996 was far above average in every category except engine in which it was still above average. My recollection is that the year they reported on was 2002. There wasn't enough data for 2003 and 2004.

For a high performance Sports Car to have such outstanding quality is truly remarkable IMO.

I agree! Despite all the bitching here it is a great car for the money and the performance you get! Especially if you buy one that is a couple years old.

I don't believe anything from Consumer Report. They are clueless when it comes to cars.

I do think 02 build quality is better and I think it's up to expectation unlike earlier 996.

Yes what rss997 said.... And may I add that driving these cars is very well above average... I just love the feeling behind the wheel, it is intoxicating. No matter if it is on an open road or in bumper-to-bumper traffic.

Their evaluation is based on historical data gathered against each of the cars reported on. It's a statistical evaluation methodology that is typically dominated by cars manufactured in Japan like the Lexus, Acura, and Infiniti, etc. Since not many people question the quality of a Lexus which usually is at the top of the Consumer Quality Report, I see no reason to question their high evaluatioin of Porsche.
